Doesn't strength training count for anything when calculating the amount of exercise done each day? It seems that only cardio counts - doesn't make sense to me.

You can search strength training under "cardio". There is very little calorie burn and it is almost impossible to get an accurate amount.

Weight lifting/strength training calories are difficult to ascertain, whereas cardio calories are pretty straight forward. I count only 1 calorie for weight lifting, and then use a heart rate monitor for my cardio. If you use MFP to count your cardio calories, only eat half back because those estimates are way overstated.
