I have serious pain with two herniated discs. I am headed toward spine surgery. I MUST start some kind of workout that won't further injure my upper or lower back but be able to tone. I cannot lift or put any pressure on my shoulders. Can anyone help? Suggestions are welcome and very much appreciated. Thank you.

I injured my back right after I started dieting and just stuck to walking a lot. Still lost weight. I'm not really sure what else. My issues eventually healed itself, but it took a really long time. Back pain is tough.

elliptical machines are low impact too.

I do walk alot but my thighs, backside, tummy, and upper body are just sagging as I lose the weight. It's very discouraging. Don't have an elliptical so if you hear anything different please let me know. Thanks so much for the response. Can I ask another question? How do you delete a fatty ingredient and add an alternative to a recipe? Thanks!

or wait, do you mean, how do you change recipes you import into the recipe builder on here? if so, i still don't know other than doing the adding yourself. just wasn't sure of your question.

actually, it looks easy. i just click on the recipe and delete an item and replace it with another and it will calculate it.

Ask your doctor for a prescription for physical therapy to strengthen your back and core. They will design and oversee your exercise plan and you can use all their equipment when there. They will design a home exercise plan, too. It's what I'm doing and it has helped a lot. I'm a lot stronger, in much less pain and I have 60 lbs off.

Fellow herniated disc sufferer here! I cannot stress how helpful it has been to head over to physical therapy and also to take up a yoga class that specifically focuses on healthy backs. These don't help shed the pounds but they are a lifesaver on days when my back is acting up. I know my stretches and exercises and I do them as soon as I feel pain coming on. I also stretch before and after ANY workout. If I'm having a bad day but still want to hit the gym, I head for the elliptical (low impact) or a stationary bike with a full back rest. If you're still concerned maybe talking with a trainer at a local gym is something to look into? You can always book 1 session just to get a few tips from a pro on proper form, and routines that wont exacerbate the issue. But most of all LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! One missed workout because you are a little sore is better than months missed because you overdid it and cant walk/sleep/move without pain! Good luck!

I had a herniated disk that wouldn't heal and was causing extreme pain for eleven months. I ended up having to have surgery in November. I recommend walking. It was the only exercise I had to do to recover from surgery and strengthen the muscles in my lower back. The elliptical is also good to use and is low impact.

I was told last month to stop running because of a compressed disk in my back, the doctor recommended surgery. The pain was so bad I couldn't run one step. I started physical therapy on the 2nd of this month and started to run again pain free on the 7th. Check with your insurance company, I didn't need a referral from my orthopedic for PT. Like people mentioned above he gave me lots of great exercises to strengthen my back, hips and core.

Thanks so much. Trying to get in now WITH a specialist. Slow process. Thanks for the positive feedback!
