Help! My doctor just put me on prednizone. I know I gained weight the last time I was on it and now that I'm losing weight I don't want to take it for fear of gaining weight. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid the weight gain associated with prednizone.

I was on it too and gained weight as well. I was on it for a short-term period about a month ago and I skipped my weigh-in for a week and was very diligent about my diet and exercised when I was feeling better, and maintained my weight when I weighed in the following week. Hope you don't have to be on it too long...

I know how you feel. I am on Prednisone pills, as well as I have to get an injection of it every two weeks for three years now because of my Lupus. It sucks, but many times, if you're on prednisone, it's because it's the only thing that can help. Nothing else helps me. If you know you're not going to be on it for a long period of time, just bear through. It's really all you can do. Best of luck. <3

I feel for you.just got off 6 days of it and gained 7 lbs.Try to drink more water so you feel full.If you allow yourself snacks,I would do that so you don`t have that empty feeling always.
    good luck!!

I was on prednisone 500mg die for 2wks and also was stopped from any type of exercise, I was afraid of gaining weight. I just continued my great eating and still manage to lose 4lbs, so did not gain any...

I was on it last fall after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and gained weight as well, I would have maybe voiced your concerns to your doctor when he prescribed it to you.. but I know personally taking the prednizone and getting better was more important to me than the 10 lbs or so that I gained

My husband sister in law and son have been on long term doses of Prednizone for MS, Crohn's disease and stage 3 Emphysema. You will not gain unless you are on very high doses or long term. If it is just a steri-pack I really doubt it.
  • I have Lupus and I've been on prednisone since 2002. I've gained over 100lbs but now I'm in the process of finally trying to lose the weight. I use to take as much as 60mg per day but do to my illness getting stable and me whining my doctor has cut me down to 5mg per day. To be honest it's all about the amount you take, if your a person that retains fluid badly and if you have the willpower to overcome the constant cravings for carbs. You need plenty of water to keep the prednisone from affecting your kidneys but not enough to make you retain it. Prednisone weight is a different kind of weight, we in the Lupus community call it fluff and it is the hardest kind of weight to lose. My best advice is to watch your carb and sugar intake, drink at least 40 ounces of water per day and do some kind of cardio at least 4 times per week for a minimum of 30 minutes. I have lost 15lbs in the last 60 days by following those simple rules. Good luck and if you need any more information feel free to email me.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm going to hope that the 5mg a day for 6 days won't be that bad. I will watch every bite I put in my mouth and pump up the cardio and drink lots of water. I just know it was so easy for me to gain when I was on the prednizone in January and now that I've lost weight I dont want to go backwards. Keep your fingers crossed.
