I'm in the middle of the Insanity challenge (haven't done anything in a week, I must confess, since I've been ill), which I truly like. But I'm curious to know, what other exercise challenges are out there that can be done at home and most importantly - do not require any equipment (I only have a yoga mat and 2kg weights). Which ones are your favourites?

Pushups, you can get a pull-up bar for like $15 that you hang on a door frame. My favorite at-home exercise is to simply hold weights (or gallon of water!) Put one foot on tub, one on toilet (or something similar based on your setup) and squat down to tap the weights to the floor...BAM deficit squats!! I hold weights (or gallons!) slide my mattress and do step ups onto my box spring.

http://www.jensinkler.com/hot-stepper/ - this one kills me every time. I use it as a bench mark - 5 rounds, how fast can I do it? I do it once a month to see my progress. When I first started in November, I had to do 5 rounds on a decreasing ladder (first round 8 reps, second 6, third 4, fourth 2, fifth 1). Now I can do all 5 rounds, and am working on getting it done faster.

You can do a tabata workout - You can do pushups, burpees, jump lunges and/or squats (or just regular lunges/squats if you can't do the jumping).

I have a love/hate relationship with tabata workouts. They are intense & challenging (if you're doing them right) but they're short so it's over quick :)

don't forget mountain climbers, jumping jacks, high knees are all good and require only your body and a little space.
  • If you want to incorporate some resistance training, I recommend downloading the You Are Your Own Gym program app. It's fantastic, and TOUGH.
