What a 70lb weight loss looks like on a 5'8" 54yr old female!

I've lost about 70lbs in the past year. I'm a 5'8", 54 yr old female. I was fighting several autoimmune diseases that was attacking my entire body and had made weight loss extremely difficult. I became deaf in one ear, lost even more of my eyesight, had digestive issues, loss of cognition, memory loss, extreme fatigue and depression. I was on over a dozen prescriptions. The doctors were clueless, so I decided to change the things I could. I wanted to improve my nutrition, drop my weight, improve my fitness and continue to investigate my health issues. It's been an eventful year. I've made progress on all of my goals. I feel incredible! 80% has been due to diet and exercise, and I can't recommend MyFitnessPal enough. My starting weight was over 235 and I'm currently at 164.5 @ 25% body fat. I'm still a work in progress; I plan to lose an additional 15 lbs and lower my body fat to about 20%. Here's what 70lbs looks like! (You'll also see the before and after of our home remodel).

Many autoimmune issues have some improvement with a healthier diet and exercise. I hope you are feeling that sort of improvement as well as what you definitely see in the mirror and in your kitchen. Congrats!0

Nice work! Did your diet/exercise help your autoimmune issues as well?0

ABSOLUTELY! I believe the nutritional changes in my diet alone accounted for at least half of my health improvements. Doctors are at least a decade behind in the research for autoimmune disease treatments. Doctors may try to treat the damage that has already occurred with prescriptions, surgery and devices, but they know virtually nothing about how to prevent further damage. That leaves patients to investigate the research on our own. I'm now gluten-free, no added sugars or sweeteners, eat less than 40% carbs, eat lean meats and good fats, and minimize processed foods (including alcohol). I didn't do it all at once. Even if I had known all these changes would help me, it would have been too daunting. I started by using MFP. Once I became 100% gluten free for about a month, I saw huge changes (even a trace spirals me into severe flare ups for weeks). A light went off. I realized these changes were no longer a choice, but a medical necessity. Looking better is nice, but regaining and maintaining my health is priceless.0
