Sumo deadlifts are done with a wider stance and are executed a bit differently. Neither is really better than the other, just a matter of preference.

Well that was a ridiculous topic title. Why not use "Difference between sumo and regular dead lift?"

Or do you title every email you send with OMG PLEASE READ THIS NOW?

Sumo deadlifts have a decreased range of motion so they are "easier" for some people. They hit more muscles: the quads, adductors, glutes, and hamstrings. It's easier on the back because the torso is more upright in the pull.

Conventional deadlifts are primarily posterior chain: back, hams and some glute. The range of motion is greater so that adds challenge. You can probably do more weight. It really works the back because you need to brace your core harder. These will really make you sore.

Romanian deadlifts are conventional deadlifts where you don't put down the weight so you don't bend your knees as much. These really work the hamstrings. The back doesn't get as much work because you're not pulling the dead weight off the ground every rep.

Rack pulls are conventional deadlifts off a raised rack. You can do more weight but have a decreased range of motion. It's for working up to heavier deadlifts. You can lower the starting point and keep the heavier weight as a progression.

I doubt I'd do well in a competition if I were just trying to bust out an RDL.

    LOL.

    DYELB?
