Today I attempted my first marathon walk...good news, I got further than I anticipated but not quite the full distance, 22 miles. flat mall walking in decent shoes. My legs hurt towards e last few hours, so I made myself stop. This evening I'm pretty sore, extremely behind my knee...like the bottom of the hamstring and very top of calves. Any one know if this is common, know how to prevent, or what this area is called? I don't think it will prevent me from trying again, thought it could be a lot worse off after attempting it for the first time!

Depends on where you come from in terms of fitness levels. I do an annual hike which is about 26 milrs in the hills, and everything aches for days, so what you describe sounds normal to me.

Sounds normal. Epsom salt is your friend.

What was the training leading up to this?

Your body is telling you that you just walked 22 miles. You may be tight & sore for a while.

If you're doing this regularly, consider a foam roller.
  • Try rubbing some black seed oil on the area that hurts. Works wonders

rest, epsom salt bath, ice then gentle walking within 2 days.
and then train more before your next 42k walk.
  • Press your thumb into the centre of the sole of each foot. Just below the ball of your feet. Preferably use the left hand for left foot and vice versas. Rub/press 100 times each foot.
Also, rub on the tip of your toe pads on each of your toes.
I know it sounds weird but this has helped me with knee pain, shin splints, ankle pain, tight muscles etc. it comes from reflexology

I did a walk/run half marathon in 2007. I could barely walk for days I was so stiff. Sounds pretty normal to me.

    lol pretty much.
I'm in decent shape and do the Avon Walk which is 39.3 mile over 2 days.
Saturday night I'm sore, Sunday I'm still sore but have 13.1 more miles to walk. Monday kinda sucks, Tuesday is fine.

Seriously, stretching, rolling, hot bath with epsom salt (or hot shower)

Exactly this  You should be fine in 3-4 days.
