Sorry if this sounds dumb. I have seen a lot of people talking about "lifting heavy" to maintain muscle mass. Do they mean actually machines or Dumbbells?

    Free weights like barbells and dumbbells are typically whats meant.

    lifting heavy is relative to your current strength levels. The idea is progressive load strength training. So it may start as machines and progress to dumbells then to barbells, increasing the load as you progress...

    I think basically if your in a deficit you should try to maintain the strength you have in all your lifts your doing or possibly even getting stronger in them so your body thinks it has a reason to hold onto the muscle you have built. I could be completely wrong though.
