Can you lose weight without exercise

Hi Everyone,
I would really appreciate some advice. I will be having an operation on my foot next week. I have been advised by my doctor, that I cannot do any exercise for six weeks. Has anyone successfully lost weight by sticking to the allocated 1200 calories and not exercising? Any advice, tips would be appreciated.

I have before, but I hit a brick wall after a few weeks. If I were you, I would still do some non-aerobic exercises, if only to keep yourself up mentally. Maybe some light weights for your arms.
Ask your doc if sit ups or leg lifts would be ok.0 -
MOst definitely (I lost most of my weight doing WW and very little exercising, this was several years ago. I now exercise 6-7days a week). It healthier fo ryou to do it w/ diet AND exercise, but for the most part, weight loss is defined by your caloric intake.0

Yep! I have a bad knee and had surgery a couple of months ago; I can't really do too much more than walking. I have my daily cals set to 1200, and I've lost 3 lbs in the past 10 days that I've been on here. Feel free to friend me if you want to see my diary and what I've been eating, but it can be done!0

I don't know if this is the norm, but when I first started on MFP with my girlfriend, we concentrated only on a healthy diet and getting our caloric intake under control. We did this for around 2-3 months and lost about 20-30 lbs each just concentrating on that with minimal exercise. This may not be true for everyone, but personally I'm obese so that alone was enough to jump start the process.
You can work your upper body out even if it's just around the house. I would look into some options.0 -
I have actually decided to do this without additional exercise. Don't get me wrong, I get on my bike every now and then and sometimes go for long walks but I hate getting hot and sweaty at the gym. I've joined numerous gyms, brougth dvd's and all the home equipment you can think of, but only maintain this for a few months - I just don't enjoy it  I do enjoy pilates and yoga exercise to keep me flexible though.
My own thoughts are that using exercise for weight loss will only help me if I keep it up long term. Once I stop (which I will, because I hate it) my motivation will slow down again and the weight will come back on. Therefore, this time, I'm doing it just by calorie counting, balancing my nutrients and being myself. That way I hope this will become a way of life rather than a chore.
I do think you should try and do some very light exercise though - nothing excessive, just to help you heal and keep you mobile. I expect you will be recommended some physio time exercises.
BTW, my calorie count is 1530 a day and I lose about 1lb a week which is a good recommended loss.
Good luck with your op, and your weight loss0 -
No you must still do some kind of exercise. Even walking is exercising it causes your body to more calories then just setting around eating which you still burn calories if you set around but not as many.0

This is a suggestion that worked for me and wanted to pass it along. While you are healing stay as active as possible with your good foot and leg. Flex it move it exercise with it to keep the muscles in your foot that is being operated on from atrophying. The nervous system for the legs and arms are peripheral so as long as the muscle is firing on the opposing side the muscles you are not using will still get some signal and not waste away.
Now since you read this I will tell you how i know this works.. I shattered my left ankle, and now have A LOT of metal in there. I learned this luckily very early on in my healing process of 4 months of no walking. The day I was aloud to walk with out crutches I was able to stand on one foot...the recently broken one, and 4 days later I was back walking again like normal. Not 8 weeks of PT but 4 days.
Just some suggestions going into sedentary mode for a bit. =0)0 -

I would say listen to your doctor. In the grand scheme of things, six weeks will only be about 1/3 into your weight loss goal (assuming you lose 2lbs per week). Don't take a chance injuring yourself.
That being said, I saw a link on another site talking about an old PBS show called Sit and Be Fit... Here's a link to youtube videos of it:

Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much for your replies and kind words. I feel so much better now knowing that evendough, I won’t be able to exercise, as long as I stick to my 1200 calories I should lose some weight. The only good thing about my op is that my kids will be at my beck and call.0 -
Weight loss is 80% nutrition, 20% exercise so yes.0

Yes but it doesn't last long because your body ajust to it so you have to "shock" your body once in awhile and change your eating and exercise habits but in your case you have no choice and as long as you stick to your 1200 a day calories a day and start exercising once cleared through a doctor I'm sure you will be fine. Good luck!0

Yes of course! This sounds weird but sometimes I lose more weight on weeks I don't exercise than weeks I do.0

I know I hate it when people answer my questions with a question, but what did your doctor say? Did you talk to them about your concerns? If not then that is your best bet. Not to mention he may have some professional advice that will amaze you. :drinker:
Best wishes of quick healing, health, and comfort to you! :flowerforyou:0
