So I have read a lot of good and bad about this diet the one I have taken interest to is the cabbage soup made with other veggies and ingredients and each day you eat a specific food group along with the soup I have been considering trying it out. What is everyone's opinion?

Sounds like a lame week to me. What do you get out of doing this?

Can't you kick off dieting by just starting to eat better? Why do you need to lose water?

I've seen my sister suffer through this diet a few times. She usually gives up a day or two after "banana and milk" day. My only suggestions would be either don't do it or warn the people around you that you're going to be hangry and miserable for a week.

Well the thing about water weight loss is it comes right back when you stop the cause of it. So yeah it will work for the 7 days, and then when you stop and eat normal food again it will come right back. So in the end all you really did was eat icky soup for a week and get very temporary results.

It's a good way to kick off an unhealthy attitude to eating and a fantastic way to ensure that you won't succeed at a) being healthy long term b) creating long term healthy eating habits c) losing and keeping off weight. How about just eating healthy nutritious foods instead of some ridiculous stringent diet?

Of course you'll lose weight starving yourself by only eating soup. And you'll probably have horrific gas from the cabbage soup. You could just lose weight by eating at a deficit. Fad diets rarely produce log term results.

The fact that they don't have fat or protein in the first few days seems like a poor choice, but the idea of eating soup if you kept some fat and protein in the soup, like adding some meat with it, and then doing the fruit plus soup, then veggies and fruit plus soup progression? That seems fine, really.

One of the reasons the lack of fat is an issue? The way the human body works, you actually don't absorb the nutrients as well without a fat source eaten at the same time. It's actually a possible reason why fat-based vegetable sauces and dressings are so prevalent world-wide. (why salad dressing can be a good thing. :-)

If one didn't want to eat meat, could do toasted nuts and/or avocado on the early days, for that added fat and protein, potentially.

I'm not sure how a soup diet would make you lose water weight, but why would you want to in the first place? You're just going to gain it back when you rehydrate.

It's just eating at a deficit. There is nothing special about the soup.

If you love soup, go for it. Otherwise just eat at a deficit and eat what you want. If you want this change to be long term then it has to be sustainable for you. No faddy foods/omitting food groups etc.

    Good luck my friend. X

Almost any reduction in calories/foods will cause a drop in water weight in the first week or so of a diet. It's why all those diet pills and gimmicks can guarantee such dramatic weight loss the first week. It's temporary and it's not a guarantee of success.

The Six Soup Diet is better, but I heard the Five is best. The Four day soup diet is good too, but not quite as good as 400 Day Soup diet. Heard really good things about 39.75234 diet, but you know.

Personally I like the Eleventeen Soup Day Diet, which is the best. It's not a completely fabricated number of arbitrary of days as the other soup day diets.

Why not just spend some time learning how weight loss works? Sirely what you are after is soemthing thats going to let you lose weight in a healthy way and is sustainable. MFP is very much about lifestyle changes rather than fad diets. Educating yourself will give you the knowledge so you cna make your own mind up and understand why, rather than listening to other people with annecdotal explanations.

You lose weight simply because you are eating so few calories.

    Here are some reviews.

I'm sure some will attack me for saying this, but for me this kind of "kick-off" diet was very helpful. I didn't do the soup diet per se, but did eat nothing but fruit, vegetables, and fat-free yogurt for 5 days at the start of my weight loss journey. I *did* lose a lot of water weight. Seeing that big 5 lb. loss on the scale was a great motivator for me to stick with eating at a calorie deficit, and eventually I addded in a good bit of exercise to burn even more calories. If it works for you, I say go for it. Just don't expect to live with it for the rest of your life.

I have tried this diet 17 years ago when I was in college. I lost 15 lbs the first time I tired, gain 10 back in a few month, tried again, lost 10 lbs, gained back, tried the diet, again and again. I lost less and less each time I went back to it and I was miserable. What ever makes you loss weight fast you usually gain it back fast.

One step at a time and you would be more likely to keep the weight off. I have been eating what ever I want in moderation and being on my ideal weight for the past year. My opinion, don't bother with that soup diet.

    Good luck!

I enjoy the Taco Bell diet. I eat all of the Gorditas and Chalupas I want for and lose weight.

Granted I have to work remotely from my bathroom and the following gif applies after 2 days but... whatever it takes.

In all seriousness, I never want to know about that soup diet ever again. It grosses me out knowing how many times I tried it! I can remember the smell of that soup and it makes me gag.

    giphy.gif

It was a diet I was always glad it was done by the end of the week. Why did I keep doing it? I wanted to lose the weight. Did I? Yeah, but not much... gained it all back starting on day 8 when I began eating normally. I've definitely lost way more weight by eating all things in moderation now by using MFP than I ever did eating that dam soup.

No need to "jump start" anything, just begin your calorie deficit. Everything will fall into place.

The cabbage soup diet was popular at my old job. But those poor ladies suffered. And never quite lost the weight either. I pass.

Thanks for everyone's input. I already have been eating heathly for a month and lost almost 10 pounds I was just really curious about this soup thing but from the sounds of it it's not worth it

I've done this before. It's only a week, but hard to do. I would keep off the weight I lost, but perhaps just because it helped me get into a healthier mode of eating.

I still make the soup periodically just because I like it and it is healthy and makes me eat more vegetables. I just don't follow the rest of the plan.

It's a delicious Soup (I actually just had some for lunch) but the diet end result will just be water weight :( It's not a perfect cure all. Eat it because it's a healthy choice for a meal and because you like it. Not to drop 10 pounds you will eventually gain right back afterwards.
