cardio vs. strength training

Hey all,

Quick question regarding the effectiveness of cardio vs. strength training for a person new to working out.

I'm currently 230 lbs. and of course looking to drop some weight. I'm beginning my new workout regiment by focusing solely on cardio (generally doing about an hour on the elliptical - in my mind I'm thinking that I need to lose weight before there's any muscle to tone...is this right? or should I already be doing strength training too?) Like I said, I'm new to the community and looking for some advice on the best way to lose some weight.

Thanks.

Muscle will burn more calories than fat. It's a great idea to incorporate some strength training. It's good to have muscle to support that cardio training. I like the 30 day shred with jillian michaels. You can strength train at any weight/size!

    GO FOR IT!

There should be no "versus". Do both. They are not mutually exclusive.

I agree, both is great for losing. Seems like I lose quicker when I add cardio, but strength is great for staying power and to help burn calories.

    Agreed.

I still have 40-50 lbs to lose, but have been doing strength training from the start. It's exciting to see my muscles become more developed, even though I'm still trying to lose fat. You might have to poke through a few inches of fat to find my abs, but I can point out my bicep and rear deltoid and tricep muscles in my arms. :drinker:

I figure, why wait until you can see my muscles before I start working on them? this way, they look halfway decent when they start showing!

Do weights too! The more muscle on your body the higher your metabolism, which means you burn more calories 24 hours per day.
