Swimming workout routine

I started running a while ago but because of my weight, my knees began hurting and I had to stop. I've been thinking about swimming as a substitute (my local Y has an indoor pool). Does anyone have an recommendations for swimming workout routines for a beginner to swimming as a workout?

Thanks!

There is a "0 to 1650" program for swimming that works along the lines of C25K. (1650yd/1500m is a "swim mile" in the US).

    0 to 1650

Depending on your swim experience, it might be both fun and helpful to sign up for a private lesson to get some stroke technique help. A little bit can go a LONG way in making pool time more enjoyable. :)

Also check and see if your area has a local Master's group. I swim with Master's and it is so much more fun. We have a coached workout, so I get pushed much harder than if I made my own workout and it's more fun to swim with a group of people IMO. I have made a lot of swim friends, plus I get instructions on how to improve my strokes. Most take beginner as well as seasoned swimmers. http://www.usms.org/ That's the website for Masters. Swimming is awesome!!!!!

There are also many water related exercise classes at the Y...aquacise, water in motion, and watergym (which I teach) to name a few! There should be an aquatics director, give him/her a call to find out all of your options!

I did an 8 week clinic when prepping for a triathlon and learned a lot about swimming. It did make things MUCH more enjoyable. Also have me tons of ideas for workouts....I also googled others. Swimming is great.
