okay, so I know that breathing is important.
duh.

but I was curious about how in yoga/pilates/etc they're always saying WHEN in inhale, WHEN to exhale.. how crucial is that to the success of the workout?

I do realize that sometimes if I'm trying really hard or concentrating on something I tend to hold my breath, but obvious fact aside that you need oxygen, does it REALLY matter if I'm inhaling when she says exhale, and vice versa? just curious! those ladies are always more fit than me so I'll listen anyway, but ya know :)

I think exhaling at certain points does help put more power into certain moves.

In yoga, it helps to focus on your breath. It helps to bring your mind into that very quiet focused state. I never paid much attention to whether I was inhaling or exhaling. Just try to stay smooth and fluid. Try to be aware of breath holding. You will feel better and more energetic if you keep breathing

When I'm doing weights I try to set my breathing up so that I'm exhaling when I do the lift, and inhaling when returning to neutral. I read somewhere that it was a good way to go, my physical therapist after my car accident also encouraged me to do that. *shrug*
