P90/90x?

I'm not seeing _what this is_.

I know that before I were to start a strenuous exercise regime I'd need my doctor to advise me, but what exactly does P90 or P90x mean? How do you get started? What does it take / how long do you do it & how frequently? I see _that_ people are doing it, but not _what_ it means.

And, be kind if you would - I'm just starting walking everyday, so I might not be able to jump into a marathon just yet.

P90 stands for Power 90 and P90X is a more extreme version of that (Power 90 Extreme). I started with P90X, but also purchased P90 as a supplement for the evenings. P90X is difficult at first, but as your body gets stronger you are able to do the exercises just as they do. The program lasts 90 days, it comes with a meal plan that you follow and you also get a calendar. You can do the classic (which is 1x/day), the lean (1x / day then goes to 2x/ a day), or the P90X doubles which is 2xs/day. I lost 20 lbs doing this program. If you are just starting out, definitely start with just P90 ( they have a circuit 1/2 for beginners then a 3/4 for a little more advance). The P90 exercises are about 30-40 minutes. The P90X exercises range from 17 minutes - AB Ripper X to 95 minutes - Yoga. What I like about both programs is that he has modified versions of the exercises in case you have knee problems or if you are not quite there. Not only did I lose weight, but I gained a lot of muscle definition. I highly recommend these exercises programs if you are ready and have checked with your physician. They are wonderful and Tony Horton has a great sense of humor. I have since graduated from the program and am now doing INSANITY which is a more intense workout and has a ton of cardio. Insanity is very difficult, but I am determined to finish the program (only 60 days). Good luck! Start slow and don't give up!

So is this a video series? A book? Do you do it inside/outside? Do you need equipment?

I think it's a video series. You can sometimes catch the infomercials on late night television. I always thought I wanted to try it but I have a bum knee after torn meniscus so I figured I couldn't do it. But after what she said (modified versions for knee problems) perhaps I can. I am sure if you google p90 and/or p90x you will find a wealth of information on where to buy and how much. I bet you can find it cheaper on amazon (used) though.

Oh, had to edit, I don't think you need any equipment except maybe some small hand weights?? Maybe a stair step?? It's been a while since I have seen the infomercials.

These are DVD video programs (12 for P90X + 4 P90X plus) that you can purchase only through beachbody.com. P90 are 2 dvds with 3 exercise programs for each DVD. The first DVD contains the first phase when you are just starting and the 2nd DVD contains the 2nd phase for a little more advance workout. For P90, all you need is a set of dumb bells or resistance bands. For P90X you need dumb bells or resistance bands and pull up bar. You may also need a yoga mat. I love it because I don't have to go anywhere and I can stay in the comfort of my room and have privacy. They try to sell you on their recovery drink and their shakeology shake, but they are extremely expensive. I drink Muscle Milk as my recovery drink. (you can get this at Walmart or any grocery store as well as a nutrition store) You want to eat protein or drink the recovery drink within 30 minutes post workout as this helps build lean muscle and keeps you from getting super sore. This was recommended to me by a body builder at the Vitamin Shop. Hope this helps!

I have knee problems too and I can do these modified. Tony Horton himself talks about his shattered knee. Yes you need equipment and unfortunately you can only order the workouts through beachbody.com. Set of dumbbells or resistance bands and a pull-up bar. Also a yoga mat for floor exercises. If you go to beachbody.com you can watch a video on P90X as well as other programs. There are a lot of fantastic exercise programs on this site. You can also read customer reviews on them as well.

OK, cool. I know that I'm doing OK for now in my weight loss, but the second half, making my body stronger and healthier, will require exercise and resistance training, so I'm trying to get up the nerve to start doing something more strenuous.

I've run in the past for exercise (college) and *never* enjoyed it. I have been a gym member in the past as well, faithfully working out for months and seeing zero change (I mean zero reduction in waist size or arm or chest size), so I'm not sure if this will do the trick.

I have knee problems (already had one knee surgery) and i have asthma.. I do P90X every day. I just do what I can. If I know its something that will be hard on my body, i skip it and do the next workout on the video. Today I did arms/back which was mostly weights. It was pretty easy but i could feel the burn which was good. You can use whatever weight you want, light weights, heavier weights.. take breaks when you need to. I figure 20 minutes of working out is better than nothing..Dont beat yourself up if you cant do the whole video, atleast you are trying!

I stand corrected. You can purchase through Amazon; I had looked in the past and had never seen it anywhere other than beachbody. I'm glad Amazon is selling it. It's a good idea though to go to the beachbody site and look at the video and read the information before you purchase so you know what you are getting in to. Here is the link that takes you directly to the P90X information: http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/p90x.do?tnt=P90X_WU_B2

Hope it works out for you!

A word to the wise (and I am not saying this just because I am a Team Beachbody Coach). Becareful when you buy from a site like Amazon or Craigslist. A lot of the P90X and Insanity's that are being sold on there are not new, are counterfeit or do not work. I have had several people contact me about them buying it from those sites and the DVD didn't work or it did not come with everything that it was suppose to. I highly recommend you buying from either a Team Beachbody Coach, or directly from Beachbody.com

To the orginal poster, my suggestion would be to start with Power 90 (I wish I had a coach to steer me in that direction when I was first starting out) and then build your way up to P90X. P90X is extreme and in my opinion in order to get the most out of the program, it is best to have a solid base. Thus starting with Power 90. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions please let me know.

    Keep pushing your fitness forward.....

Good point Stooooo! Beach body also offers a 90 day money back guarantee. I've only purchased through beach body and have been completely satisfied. I also agree on starting with P90 before P90X. I wish I knew I had that option as well before P90X, but I stuck with it even when I thought I couldn't do the workouts and eventually was able to do everything as my body got stronger.

    Great advice!
