I do slimming world but also track on here. More freedom with slimming world but if im going to be bad rather than loosing control I stay within a calorie rang.
you can eat any food that is free in any Quantity the idea being you stop when ur full.
Add me im more than happy to talk you through any questions I have bee doing last 3 years on and off x1 -
On MFP no food is free. You log everything you eat, staying in the calorie range that MFP gives you when you pick how many lbs you want to lose/week. Make sure your goal isn't too aggressive (AKA trying to lose 2lbs/week while only needing to lose 15lbs). Links are below to help you get started.

I swapped slimming world for this. I found sw too restrictive, using all my Damn syns if j fancied white bread or some chocolate! I also couldn't get my head around how I'd lose weight on it. I know people do, I've seen some incredible success stories but it didn't sit right with me that a lot of the free foods are so calorific. The packets of bachelors pasta or rices and their new ready meals for example.
Nothing is free food on here, everything has to be logged right down to the last apple or piece of broccoli. But I've found it a lot better as I can eat what I want as long as it's accounted for so I feel like I make the rules rather than sticking to ones that have been set for me.
Maybe use some of the lower calorie meal ideas you learnt from slimming world and incorporate them into this.0 -
Aww thanks for the advice. Pipsqueak I've sent you a request. And thanks I'll look at the links.I did Sw for ages and lost ok on but when it changed to extra easy I wasn't losing that much x0

I used to do SW. Yeah it works, but it is nowhere near as fun as MFP, On SW I was basically overdosing on fruit everyday, I felt restricted, but on MFP I have lost weight and I just eat what I want (very unhealthy foods) and logging is just second nature.0

I have done slimming world for the last 2 years and lost almost 4 stone. It is a brilliant plan in my opinion but after 2 years it was time for something different for me.
If you follow the SW plan to the letter you will certainly loose weight but I found that I was continuing to binge on the free foods and therefore still eating huge amounts. Even though it was pasta and tomato based sauces and fruit etc it was still really high in calories and carbs so eventually my weight loss stopped and I decided to move on to counting calories.
For me, its all very dependant on where my head it at. I am an obsessive person (it's all or nothing!) so counting points and calories is good for me.

I tried sw for a week and found it too ridiculous to continue. I love MFP you can binge on the things you do enjoy as long as it's within your calories.0

I've been using sw and lost about 50 lbs on it. I've moved away from the programme though because with all my exercise, I needed to include more calories and some different foods that would have been very costly with syns (ie: full fat yogurt, nuts for protein, etc.). Otherwise I'd feel ill eating more free food because it is bigger, more filling food.
The programme works, but for me it became too restrictive when I started ramping up my workouts. I'd recommend it if you need something to get you started, and learn how to make swaps to alter food to be lower calorie. I found it helpful to follow a programme at first, and I did learn a lot about how to eat better without feeling like I had to give up burgers and stuff.
That being said, it does cost money, and if you are active, it might not help you keep track of the calories to eat for your workouts, and macros.1 -
Thanks everyone. I did Sw about 5 years ago and lost about 3 stone but that was doing the green days. X0

MFP is just calorie counting - just the same thing that we used to do with little books and pen and paper in the old days, but much more convenient! So no foods are really "free".
Having said that though, I've never bothered to count very small amounts or very low calorie foods - tea, coffee (although I count the milk), tictacs, mustard, pickled onions, garlic, etc. Some people do count them, and if you want to be absolutely accurate, you would, but I didn't want to make it too hard for myself. (To be honest, as long as it doesn't cancel out your deficit, you could get away without recording some more lower calorie foods - lettuce, tomato, cucumber, etc. - they DO have calories, but if you're not eating loads, then you'll still lose weight if you have a deficit - you'll just lose weight a little slower).
I agree with the others about the freedom of being able to eat foods that would be syns on SW. And no more Muller Lights or Scanbrans!0 -
I swapped from SW. I still cook typical SW foods, and fill my plate with loads of fruit and veg. But I can't be doing with the faff of synning treats, which led to denying myself treats, which led to binging on treats. It always annoyed me that sugar-laden Muller Lights are free but other healthier things aren't. I just don't do well with having some foods restricted.
I did learn A LOT about how to eat well at a deficit on SW, and it's serving me well now. My diary is open, and today is a good example of combining SW foods with plain calorie counting if you want a look. So there's Pasta n Sauce quiche, a typical SW pudding, and lots of fruit and veg. But there's also chocolate, AND whiskey, AND olive oil, which would have taken me way over on syns, but fits into my 1600 calorie day just fine.0 -
I lost most of my weight following SW (5 stone). It's nearly 4 years now since I lost most of it and I've kept it all off ( bar a couple of pounds!). I've been on Mfp for a couple of years. I found it a bit of a mind shift at first, as some free foods are quite high in cals, but like many others I found it helpful when I started doing more exercise. I still attend SW sometimes as a target member, and use both tools to keep me accountable and within my weight range.0

Aww thanks everyone and Pootler I will thanks x0

my wife managed to lose 3 stone in 2 years doing SW. i gained all that 3 stone and more, despite doing all her cooking but thats mainly due to my poor choices when not at home and lack of exercise.
she is still attending SW but i have now got her logging everything, so she is doing both but so far not really lost anything. I have now lost 16lbs in about 6 weeks. logging seems to be working for me (exercising is helping too).
i think it is possible to do both plans at the same time but the high calorie content of some free foods is hard to cope with, things such as fruit.0 -
It'd be interesting to see how many calories (and how much protein) your wife is taking in on SW. It's really easy to overeat on it, especially on the green days, or Extra Easy. It's also really easy to undereat on SW, if you do red days.
In the end, I think SW (and WW) works a bit like a casino - the few big winners (or actually losers!) inspire other members to keep coming to meetings and paying in. But I think the people who are really successful are a bit anomalous.
I won't knock SW too much though - it does largely encourage people to eat more whole foods and less junk, which are brilliant habits to develop. Learning that you can lose weight without being hungry, that you can still eat chocolate and pudding, that it doesn't actually have to be torture is a revelation to many people. I'm really grateful to SW for teaching me that.0 -
I personally just hate that they have something called 'syns'! It immediately puts me in mind of restriction, which is why I think I like MFP so much...0
-
Afur that's what I'm going to try I think, like still do the recipes and things but log everything on here. As I need to do something I can't exercise at theomemt as I mhabe bad knees. But I know if I lose a lot then surely that would help0
-
I'm still doing SW now, my losses are slower than when I first did MFP, so was also thinking of just trying calorie counting again. Would be happy for any SW fans to add me too0

I started my journey with SW back in 2005ish and have been back 3 times, each time losing around 2 stone. I always seemed to stick after that and only when I found MFP did I realise why. I love pasta and potatoes and always stuck with green days. I was having far too many calories and carbs, so when I started cutting the portions and having them maybe 1-2 times weekly then I really started winning. The plans do work, but like what's in another post above, it's all about the person doing them, and in the end ot wasn't right for me. Good luck with whatever you choose!0
