Calorie goal seems low

Hello I am new to this app. I entered all of my info and the tracker has listed that my calorie intake goal is 950 per day. I weigh 192 and want to lose 60lbs but I thought consuming less than 1000 calories per day is supposed to be unhealthy.

It is a glitch. It is not suppose to go past 1200.0

There's a glitch with the system lately. It shouldn't put anyone below 1200 calories.0
-
Yes there is a glitch in the system that others have had. It should never let you eat below 1200 calories per day assuming you are female.0

Rework your goal on the website. There's a glitch in the app that's giving people fewer calories than MFP's 1200 floor. Additionally, as you received a goal less than 1200, you should probably go with a less aggressive loss per week.0

Thanks, I changed it to lose 1.5 per week instead of 2lbs and now it says 1200 calories per day. They should seriously fix that glitch before the app starts turning people anorexic! I just read another post that the app told her to eat 650 per day!0

You can also use the calculator on Authority Nutrition or Scooby's and get an idea of what you need and then use the custom setting in MFP Goals set up.

Also, some people can't lose weight at 1200 calories a day. That is not a hard and fast number. It is admittedly harder to get all the nutrients you need eating 1000 - 1100 calories but it can be done. I am in my late 50's, short and sedentary due to illness. I tried for 2 months to loss weight at 1200 calories/day with no success. I'm doing well at 1050/day.
Just remember that all the calculators give you a place to start but each of us have our own bodies and circumstances. Modify as needed to get to the point where you are losing at a healthy pace while getting the nutrients you need.0 -
Stop entering an unhealthy/unrealistic weight loss goal. Hint: change your goal to max one pound per week. Additionally, you can modify the calories higher whith I would recommend for all but the most dedicated couch potatoes. Under-eating over prolonged periods has the nasty effect of eventually slowing weight loss and promoting muscle loss. Been there, did it.
Yes MFP seems to be promoting starvation more than ever these days. Probably to please the "it's only calories in/calories out" crowd.0 -

No they aren't. It's a glitch in iOS. Anywhere else you put the information in, you won't get less than 1200. The limit and their warnings when people complete their diary under 1000/1200 are to prevent people who are trying to aid disordered eating.0 -
My calorie goal is 1050 too. It set at a weight loss of 1.5 lbs a week. I've got 50-55 lbs lbs to lose and am also short if that makes a difference. I find it is plenty of food for me. I am able to get most of my nutrients in- sometimes I'm a little off because I've had a day in which I don't make the best choices. It seemed really low to me at first but again I haven't had any problems with it. I do eat more when I exercise- around 1200 on those days.0

I know right!! Are you on an apple pc or I-phone? It looks like it's only happening on those gadgets

Yeah, I can't believe this glitch has gone on this long. It's shameful.0

You should change your weight loss goal to one pound per week. With only 60 lbs to lose, that is an appropriate weight loss rate, rather than 1.5 lbs a week. You should take it slow and make the process easier on you.

I don't see how 60 lbs is an unrealistic or unhealthy weight loss goal. I gained 60 lbs while I was pregnant, had the baby and lost 15 lbs then gained another 20 again. So now I'm trying to lose the extra baby weight I gained. I'm please explain how that is unrealistic since you are clearly the expert.....

Before the glitch, "realistic goals" was good advice.
Sadly, at this point, it's not only user error that's causing unattainable results.0 -

2 lb / week is entirely reasonable with so much to lose.
Around 40 or so above a healthy goal weight, 1 to 1.5 lb would be reasonable.
Here's a BMI chart. See if your goal is a healthy weight.

Here's a calculator from the Baylor College of Medicine which will tell you how many calories to eat to maintain a certain weight. Put in a weight from the green (healthy) range in the table above. It will also tell you how many servings of the various food groups you should be eating.

Dear Posters,
The forum guidelines include this item:
3. No Promotion of Unsafe Weight-Loss Techniques or Eating Disorders
a) Posts intended to promote potentially unsafe or controversial weight loss products or procedures, including non-medically prescribed supplements or MLM products will be removed without warning.
b) Profiles, groups, messages, posts, or wall comments that encourage anorexia, bulimia, or very low calorie diets of any kind will be removed, and may be grounds for account deletion. This includes positive references to ana/mia, purging, or self-starving. Our goal is to provide users with the tools to achieve their weight management goals at a steady, sustainable rate. Use of the site to promote, glamorize, or achieve dangerously low levels of eating is not permitted.
c) Photos intended to glamorize extreme thinness will be deleted.
d) Those seeking support in their recovery from eating disorders are welcome at MyFitnessPal.
MyFitnessPal does not condone such low levels of eating, and this bug has been brought to the attention of the Admin. Getting the appropriate amount of nutrition eating only 600 calories a day is incredibly hard, and this diet may lead to fatigue, hair loss and other serious medical conditions.
We ARE looking into it.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. I've been using the app on my iPhone for several months and I love it. I recommend it to everyone. Since December I've had my goal set to lose 2 pounds, at sedentary level (since it's winter, for one, and also I sync with the Pacer app to track my steps and count calories burned). This has kept me at a goal of about 1200 calories a day. I've been losing weight gradually and feel like I've struck a nice balance. Yesterday my goal changed itself, apparently, and now tells me I only need 650 calories a day! Yikes! My husband uses the app too, and the same happened to him. I figured it had to be a glitch. Hope it's fixed soon. I'll manage, but won't be able to recommend it to newbies until it's sorted.0
