Hey folks,

Does anyone have an extremely rumbling stomach either before bed or during the night? I have a feel that is a major impact on my life as well as on my weight as before the growling I was near my ideal weight. Now I am obese because I have to eat before and during the night although trying my best to cut down what I eat during the night but what I eat I am unable to burn off obviously. Any other time is fine but when you get woken up by a growling stomach and need sleep for work the next day, all I can do is eat enough until the growling stops and then get back to sleep. I have been to the doctor more times than I can count on my fingers and toes and basically so frustrated with the whole thing. Any folks have any ideas on what to eat either before or during the night that isnt lots of kcals but helps nip the growling in the bud?

Thanks for reading.

A banana will not only keep you topped up, but was recommended by my doctor to eat before bedtime to prevent insomnia as it contains tryptophan. Good luck!
  • I find that my stomach growls before bed as well. I eat saltine crackes for a snack and that usually stops the growling, and 5 saltines are only 60 calories. But I supose if you dont like saltines, any kind of cracker like wheat thinks or triscuts would be good too. :)

Have you tried downing a glass of water when it rumbles? That usually helps me because mine does get a bit noisy right before bed. Does it wake you up in the middle of the night and keep you from going back to sleep?

I completely understand!!! I had a growling stomach last night. I don't give in usually, if I absolutely need something it's usually protein. I also eat a big breakfast because I sadly wake up starving as well. Figure it will go away if I do it enough.

Try eating a lot of protein for dinner and a protein bar for a snack about an hour before you go to bed. Protein is a lot harder to digest and should stay with you through the night. I would eliminate all carbs at night. Your body can digest them quickly and it makes you feel hungry quicker. If you like boiled eggs, try boiling a few and leaving them in the fridge, and if you do wake hungry.

I'd recommend an egg (or a couple of egg whites if youre low on calories)...protein will keep your digestion busy for longer. I constantly have a supply of boiled eggs. Avoid processed carbs in the evening (and generally to be honest) they are often the cause of late night hunger.

    EDIT - great minds Lorri

the noise is "gas" being pushed around your belly instead of food.

    tricks can be

    Water before bed

The last meal of the day being soup....... for some reason your body is programmed to "move" solid food much faster...... so soup will stay in your belly longer making you feel less hungry .
  • thanks for all your replies folks. much appreciated

Creiche's - yes I usually have a glass of water before bed but the problem with this is that if my stomach doesn't wake me up during the night then my bladder will lol. yes it stops me getting back to sleep until I eat something.

ashleyh3156 - I have to give in or I don't get much sleep. I do try not to though

LorriStricland & catcrazy - yeah I heard protein might help and a do need to try and stay off the carbs as currently I eat a roll before bed which helps but doesnt help the waistline. never thought of eggs to be honest so will defo give them a try :)

LeeKetty1176 - again tried water but when needing the loo my stomach will start rumbling. tried soup as well but felt this didn't fill me up enough
  • sara - will try what you have suggested. up for any suggesting tbh
