I bloat a lot. My lower stomach is like a ballon at times. It's not fat but it swells up a lot. It doesn't look good in a leotard and I'm having to stuck in constantly to remain a normal size. Why am I so bloated? & how can I stop/reduce it?

Do you have gut issues? IBS maybe? Some foods perhaps don't agree with you?

Have you been able to identify what type of foods cause the bloating?

I do take probiotics and those seem to help a little. I'm not sure if I have any gut issues, at least I don't know of any...

  • Try to look into seeing a GI specialist. I've suffered from the exact same symptoms. My lower abdomen area tended to "inflate" and bloat all the time with much discomfort. After a battery of tests, I found out I had celiac disease and an intolerance to dairy. I feel SO much better today. Good luck!

How is your sodium intake? How much water do you drink?
  • I'd suggest having 6 meals with portions the size of your fist with 3-4 hours in between each meal. Foods that are rich in fat and protien. Pecans, avocados, rich whole fat yogurt, etc.... And gum chewing or sucralose personally makes me bloat. But I tried eating like this and my boyfriend could almost put his hands around my waist. ;-) You just have to be cautious to have calorie-rich foods, and after a few days any portions bigger than that will make you feel like you ate a buffet.

That happens to me when I drink soda. I didn't drink any for almost 2 months, had a cup the other day, and spent all day yesterday feeling gross and bloated.

I had bloating really bad a few weeks back, Water and less sodium was my answer. But if it's constant with no help of the water and less sodium, you may want to ask a GI.

I had this issue a month or so back, stress was a huge factor but also my gut seems to react with onion and garlic, which is a shame as I love both :(

I 2nd this. Soda does this to me. It took me a loooonnnggg time to figure this out and coming off soda is a real b*tch from what I'm told, but I hear you'll feel so much better. I'll let you know soon, as I just came off of it this morning and would kill for a Dr. Pepper right now.

I started taking Carb inhibitors (itworks product) after my biggest meal and now I never have any bloating. I would watch your diet and consult your physician.

Do you have weight gain with the bloat? I gained 20 pounds in 6 months, all in the stomach when I was upright (I looked pregnant and was very uncomfortable). After lying down all night, my face was so swollen each morning that I had to use compresses to reduce to swelling around my eyes enough to get my contacts in. I also had neurological symptoms -- muscle spasms and my tongue would go numb. Two doctors told me that I was just gaining weight due to a lower metabolism and aging (I am 52). Made me CRAZY because I knew that this was not from overeating.

I have a lot of food allergies, so in desperation, one day I started eating only boiled chicken for 3 days and then added one food every 2 days (but same number of calories before and after), keeping close track of my symptoms. Turns out that after I stopped eating almost all fruit, I am fine again -- all of the swelling, the massive weight gain, and the other symptoms have disappeared.

    I am switching doctors.
