High Fiber Diet!

Options
Hi!
I just recently had a laparoscopic surgery done and my doctor notices that my colon was extremely enlarged and very backed up. He said it has been going on for years, I guess. So he has told me I need to go on a high fiber diet.
Any snack or meal ideas that are high in fiber??
Thank you!

Careful, as fiber can temporarily make the problem worse. Build up slowly.

If you eat soluble fiber, take it with lots of water or cook it in water first. I think all my snacks are high in fiber. I am eating popcorn with hummus right now. An apple is high in fiber.

This might be a good resource...http://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/063008p28.shtml

Bob's Red Mill has a Organic High Fiber hot cereal that would be good for breakfast or snack. Just be careful if you aren't used to a lot of high fiber food, you might want to take it a little slow so you don't have stomach issues.

Quest Bars pack a whallop--20g of dietary fiber. Beans provide a huge boost, as does Kashi cereal or traditional oatmeal. Other sources that help throughout the day include brown rice, whole-grain bread, popcorn, and potatoes or sweet potatoes w/skin (including chips and fries!).. as well as many fruits and vegetables. I try to avoid carbs with no fiber and easily average about 40g/day.

I generally try eating whole wheat bread; beans - one of the best is lentils. Peanuts, peanut butter; vegetables such as spinach.

Agree with the advice to build up slowly, it's easy to add fibre by choosing wholemeal options of bread, pittas, muffins etc, as well as eating plenty of grains, pulses, fruit and veg - also oatmeal or porridge oats not only provide fibre but help lower cholesterol too.

I eat fiber one cereal in the morning. The plain bran kind. 1 cup has 28 g of fiber alone. After that it's easy to reach my goal of 40 g but I usually get 50-60, the other day I got 71. I also eat beans a lot. Also quest bars have like 18 g. You can look at my diary if it's open (not sure how to do that on mobile)

You should be eating at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies every day. That's a decent amount of fiber right there. You can also get additional fiber from nuts, legumes, whole grains, etc.

I eat lots of fruit and veg, but because I don't really like grains, I miss out on the fibre in things like bread. So I add psyllium husk powder to things like protein shakes and smoothies, to home made cakes and cookies, and sometimes to sauces.

And Quest bars, as if they weren't fabulous enough already with their excellent macros, have loads.

The suggested intake is about 25g for women, 38 for men. (I aim for 40g but I've not had gastric surgery.) Try to get both sorts - basically the sort in grains, and the sort in fruit and veg. And make sure you drink enough.
