Welcome Nancy! Being active on these message boards is highly encouraged...a person can learn a lot here about making the everyday choices that lead to the long term results you want to see! Some people are active by simply reading the posts and learning more, others are active in that they post questions and join in on discussions.

I am proof that Calories in/Calories out works...I have lost 47 pounds so far, and MyFitnessPal gave me the tools and info!

    Hiya Nancy!
Its really scary getting started and I hope you know that were all here to help. Its going to be difficult and sometimes painful to work out, eat better, and stay on track. What you need to remember is that its worth it!

My first tip is don't "diet". Eat what you want. START by walking every day.

Go around the block the first week. Next week try to go for 2 blocks. Walk the neighborhood by the end of the month. The pounds will melt away and it will encourage you to do even more.

The main thing to remember is that eating right and working out isnt going to be temporary. This is a lifestyle change. You need to make sure that you can enjoy your lifestyle! So for now, eat your pizza or cookies or whatever is your sin of choice but start walking! Within a month youll notice the difference.

    Hi Nancy!

These are some of the best stickies we have for new folks to read. They are clear and cover all the basics!

One tactic can be helpful is to note that you can set a variety of goals in MFP. You could, for example, tell MFP that you want to maintain your current weight. It will tell you how many calories to eat to do this. You could set it to maintenance for a few days or a week, while you get the hang of logging. Or you could start at 0.5 lb a week, or 1 lb a week. The more you tell it you want to lose per week, the less you'll be able to eat. So easing in can help your body adjust, if you're worried about that.

Otherwise, don't be intimidated! And don't over-complicate things. Eat the calories MFP says (doesn't matter what food, or when -- enjoy yourself, fill yourself up, and eat what helps you feel well). Log as accurately as you can. Move more, if you want to (it's a good idea for general wellness). Don't panic if the scale isn't always saying what you want it to (it's not usually indicating what you think). Be kind to yourself and don't stop just because you ate extra or are feeling low -- log it, move on. And reach out and make some friends, pop into the forums from time to time. :)
