cutting question

Alright, so I've been working on gaining for about a year and a half steadily. I went from 165 7% bodyfat to 185 10.5% bodyfat. i'm trying to cut back down to 7 and then go back to gaining again. I was taking in upwards of 3500 calories a day, sometimes more when I was gaining. Switching to cutting I dropped to 2k calories a day.

what are good cutting percentages? right now im at 50P/20c/30f, but i'm not entirely sure that's correct. I've never had to cut before. any advice would be appreciated.

  • that just seems like so many carbs. my LBM would be 167 if im 185 and 10% BF. so 167G of protein is only 668cal. the fats would be 495cal... so i'm to eat 900cal, of carbs? that's almost 50%

    So what? Carbs are yummy

If you don't want to eat carbs you can look at protein and fat as a minimum (0.8-1g P per lb of LBM)

In terms of your BF% how are you measuring it? That's pretty lean for an 18 month bulk
  • Measured it both times with calipers. Its really, really hard for me to gain weight. i'm lucky if I move up a pound a month. i'm pretty confident its an accurate read based off of body composition, but I could always pay the money to get in one of those pods.

yeah I was doing 50% protein 30% fats 20% carbs. with the amount of calories I dropped, and the little amount of fat i'm trying to cut, I cant imagine its going to take me that much time to get there. eating a ton of protein to try and minimize muscle loss, but i'm pretty ignorant as to how that actually works.

It's just calories in vs calories out to lose BF...the macros are for nutrition and the P specifically to preserve as much LBM as possible - I think it's something to do with nitrogen but that's a vague and dim memory from something I read once and might be wrong
  • alright cool. I appreciate the information. Pu, i'll try and go get a more authoritative read of my BF to try and alleviate your skepticism?

7% huh? Got any pictures? BTW, It's still CICO.
  • played soccer from 5 years old and into my first year of HS and then ran daily. up until two years ago I was running 30-40 miles a week. That coupled with an already high metabolism meant I could pretty much eat whatever I want. 7% Bf doesn't really mean much when your a stick though lol. why am I even bothering defending myself lmfao.

Which P are you talking about, the one in statistics?

You're talking about nitrogen balance. Amino acids, have nitrogen in them. Amino means a molecular structure with an amine group NH2(N is nitrogen, that's where the nitrogen is) and a carboxylic acid(CO2H).

In regards to nitrogen balance, excess nitrogen gets excreted through the urine. The nitrogen can be used is to make ammonia(NH3 notice again the N which is nitrogen). This is why urine smells like ammonia.

There are other ways to excrete N through other bodily functions including feces. The theory states that if you're in a positive nitrogen balance where nitrogen isn't secreted you are building muscle. If you're excreting more Nitrogen than you're consuming you're losing muscle. There was a very big flaw in that theory, forgot what it is right now, and i don't care to look it up.

thanks for that, that rings a bell...told you it was a vague memory

So it's just voodoo huh, the whole must eat protein for muscles?
