I'm not. Participants go through unhealthy programs for drastic weight loss and gaining back is common after the show ends.

^^This. I used to watch the show until the articles started coming out about what they put contestants through.

The trainers are great, the producers not so much. Sometimes I work out with it on in the background and do find it quite motivating.

I just read the article, and that is disgusting. I can't believe no one has sued the show!

It's probably the worst thing ever from a weight loss point of view because it sets unrealistic expectations and teaches nothing about how to maintain weight when you reach target.

    +1

I abhor this show. I feel sorry for the contestants, I don't find them motivational at all. I think the show has done at least as much to distort people's perceptions of what weight loss should be as the diet industry has. It's not how any normal or sane person would go about losing weight and I've seen far too many people come into these forums upset because they aren't losing weight as fast as they think they should be. It has also spawned far too many "office challenges" where people pool money and the person who loses the most weight in so many weeks wins the pool. People cause damage to themselves that way.

The stats that the Biggest Loser doesn't put out is that out of the 250+ contestants that have been on the show, 90% have gained a significant amount of weight back (including winners of the show). Statistically it's about the same result as any other diet program.

Meh, its a reality show, not a weight loss program. If you like reality shows, its ok. I have watched it some but I find the story lines contrived and boring. As far as "torture" and what the contestants "go through", they should have known that before they signed up, its not a secret. I have no sympathy at all. Don't like it? Go home.

If you find the show motivational, then rock on. I'm not about to tell someone they should ignore things that inspire them. However, I think it's sage to remember that TBL is a heavily-edited TV show about overweight people who are losing weight to win money, and not health. They may be motivated to lose their excess pounds, but they're really there to win the money, and as we all know, not everyone is going to win.

I've never been a fan of the show. I've known people who were really, really into it, and one friend actually tried to get on the show, but it never drew my interest. I saw a video some time ago, where past winners talked about gaining the weight back within a couple of years. While I do think the show's methods are horrendous, I don't think they're entirely responsible for the contestants not maintaining their weight loss. Even if someone follows a plan perfectly, the odds are stacked against them. According to this article, more than eighty percent of people who lose weight (rapidly or otherwise) will regain it within two years: http://www.nbcnews.com/id/36716808/ns/health-diet_and_nutrition/t/when-you-lose-weight-gain-it-all-back/#.VP23APnF_jk That may be blasphemy around these parts, but I believe it.

Losing weight is much easier than keeping it off, which is why I personally don't view my efforts as "weight loss", so much as I'm just "getting healthy". If I shed pounds and inches as a result, then that's gravy. And ice cream. And cake. :/ I haven't my had my morning smoothie yet. Can you tell? :D

Is anyone able to provide an article about these poor practices on the show from the voice of any contestant other than Kai?
I'm not saying she's lying, but she's the only one speaking up and she was from, like, season 2. How do we know the show hasn't addressed the issues she complains about and changed their practices? How do we know it's ongoing?

Others have alluded to it ... only she was willing to risk violating disclosure agreements. Just look at the season 15 winner and her unhealthy loss and it is obvious that the show is about competition and pseudo-reality ... not doing a damn thing in a healthy manner.

Not blasphemy at all. It's why a lot of us are still here after reaching our original goal weights. We've learned that we can't slide back into old habits or our weight will start to creep back up again. I recently read an article that equated maintaining weight loss to walking down an up escalator. The moment you stop, you start going back up again. I thought that hit the nail pretty much on the head.

I liked watching it,and any other show about massive weight loss, when I was much much overweight, yes it's hard to maintain, I think that woman, the first female to win did stay on track but she was like a pro swimmer before or something?

If it does motivate someone that's awesome,as long as we change our habits,I don't believe in diets.

    Jillian is a lesbian??? <3

The whole premise is wrong. Losing weight fast, losing weight at all cost, the number on the scale is all that matters....the focus isn't really on health.

Jillian is such a phony....selling dangerous weight loss supplements ($$$$).

Have you watched Extreme Weight Loss on ABC? It is a way better show. Each week it's a different person. They work on their journey for a year. You see them go to doctors, get nutrition advise and consultation with skin removal doctor. Very informative. You get to know them and their struggles. You get to see how they change over a year. I just love it. Chris and Heidi Powel, the trainers, are great too.

Same category as Dr. Oz in my opinion, right down to Gillian using it as a platform to hawk her wares.
