I've always struggled with my weight. Then, to top it off, 4 years ago I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and no longer have my thyroid. Since then, I have switched doctors a couple ofties, ad still have not been and to get register on medication. I've gained about 60 pounds since all of this started--partially because my metabolism is out of whack; but, mostly because I lose motivation and hope when I don't see the results I hope for. I'm getting married in September. It's been years since I have allowed people to take my picture. I know I won't be able to avoid it then. Looking for a friend to help keep me on thhis rough track...

I didn't have thyroid cancer but I was born without a thyroid, so I know how you feel. My weight problem started when I got pregnant. My levels went through the roof and I ballooned! I haven't been able to get back down. Weight loss without a thyroid is ridiculously hard. I also lose motivation after weeks and weeks of dieting and intense exercise only to see little or no results. I also have no pictures of myself, which is heartbreaking because I have none of me and my daughters together. I missed that chance because of vanity To top it all off I also have PCOS - UGHHHH
One thing that has helped me **slightly** is switching from synthetic (Synthroid, etc) to Naturally Desiccated Thyroid (WP Thyroid, Armour, etc). It is REALLY hard to find a doctor to prescribe it, though.
If you haven't already, check out the FB page "Stop the Thyroid Madness". Those ladies have lots of great advice and know what you are going through.

I had my thyroid removed in 2007 and I struggle to lose weight easily, I feel I have to do twice as much exercise as anyone else to see even a small difference in my weight. My meds are stabilised at the minute but it doesn't help with weight loss one bit. All we can do is just keep at it and hopefully we will get the results we want. Keep smiling0

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism over twenty years ago. My thyroid medication has been pretty regulated right from the start, but I too struggled with my weight. Myfitnesspal has been a godsend for me. I have lost over 34 pounds since I stared using the app in July 2014. It's been slow and steady, but pretty easy. I eat whatever I want, but log everything to ensure I stay within my daily calorie goal. I also ride my stationary bike for 30 minutes five days per week. I have the app on my phone, my Kindle, and as a favorite on my laptop internet browser so I have no excuse not to log. I have not missed a day since I started. I am 8 pounds away from the initial goal I set for myself. If I can do it, anyone can. Hang in there ladies.0

Is this the thread where all the Thyroid People hang out? Me too - diagnosed as hypo-thyroid last November and developed fibromyalgia as a result. It has been a real struggle emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

I am on Synthroid and Cytomel because I am a vegetarian and kosher, so can't do the armour. I agree with what Tarah said - it is really difficult to find a physician who will see you as a person and not as a math problem. Finding the right medical care should not be so difficult.
However, this is what we are "given," so what I have found is that there are many knowledgeable patients who come together in community forums like the FB page mentioned above. We are really our own best advocates.
As for motivation - it is really hard to know what to do: have you ever thought you were stumped by an unsolvable problem and then suddenly see the way out? If yes, maybe you can figure out how that worked for you and emulate the same process for the fitness issues?

Enjoy your life and every moment. So what if you do not like the way you look today. Take pictures anyway. Trust me I am married 31 yrs when I look back at the young me I am like wow not bad. lol If you hate to exercise then find what you do like. Hike, bike, swim, tour your city. Keep moving it does not have to be a chore. For me I am a overeater. Food is what I crave for every life moment so I have self talk going on all the time. Thank God for MFP the food diary makes me accountable. If I eat it it has to show up on the diary someplace. Stop asking people to go get this....for me. Get up and get it. Limit time sitting. Help clean up your parents garage or yours. Always have a list of things to do both fun and chores. Plan a day at a national park, beach, at least once a month. For me I can not eat out at food chains and restaurants only for very special occasions. The crap in the food there will cause me not to show weight loss for 4 days!!
Volunteer at triathlon and local road races. They always need extra pair of hands and then you meet really inspiring people who have walked all kinds of challenges. Be happy and keep the folks who sabotage your goals away from you. If it is family move 20 miles or longer to limit their involvement in your life.
