Support for fast food addicts

I am very much addicted to fast food. Any tips on avoiding this nutrition killing habit

I bought some of the heathier versions for a while (grilled chicken) then was able to wean off and don't crave it anymore. It did take a while to lose the gotta have it feeling though....0

If you are 'addicted' seek professional help.
Otherwise, the best way to avoid it is most probably not to buy it.
Not that you need to avoid it, but that's another 10-page thread in itself.0 -
Imagine in your mind that the people making the food carry it around in their trousers before it gets to you.0

I agree with the above. Additionally, if you buy it because you don't have time to cook every day/ night try prepping and freezing meals on the weekend or give a crockpot a try.0

I still eat fast food. I am at goal weight now after a long journey to get here. But if I eat a Big Mac for lunch, I know I am going to be eating very light for dinner. In that I've turned into a fresh fruit addict at night.0

It takes awhile for your tastebuds to change and adapt to reduced sugar diet. Hang in there. Good habits don't replace bad habits over night, in a week or in a month. It took me several months before the sugar cravings went mostly away. Now a small piece of dark chocolate satisifies me.
Taco Bell and Five Guys were always my problem.0 -
I struggle with this too. Also ordering delivery which is not good for the wallet or the waistline! But I echo auddii. If I make a big batch of soup or chili on the weekend and have some easy frozen items I can nuke to mix it up, it's easier to resist the urge to hit the drive through. After working, and on some days going to the gym, I don't get home until eight. By then I'm starving and in no mood to start cooking. Also buying easy healthy snacks that you actually like on hand helps a lot.0

I agree with auddll. I mostly find myself craving fast food or take out when I don't already have food prepared to eat at home so personally, I know I avoid it best when I am consistent with meal planning and meal prep.0

Like most things in life, moderation and balance. There's a survey that proves most obesity is caused from what we purchase at the grocery store. Often we impulse buy, or over buy comfort items. Goal setting helps a lot. Try plsnning ahead. I'll only buy a sandwich, or a salad. Try and share the meal with friends, family. Best of luck to us all.0

Get the better choices available on the menu. Fast Food doesn't necessarily have to be bad as the media makes it out to be.
Ex. Egg white delight, premium grilled chicken wrap with no ranch at McDonald's.0 -
Not only is it taste but it's cheaper, and more convenient. I wish healthy foods were reasonable priced.0

I can only tell you what worked for me. I just cold-turkey stopped eating it. Not going to lie, it was hard! Now, the one or two times a year I do eat at McDonald's or other fast food, I feel so sick. No longer worth it and doesn't even taste good anymore.0

Veering away from the "addiction" term...just work it in in moderation. I have it every Thursday night when I don't eat dinner until 9:30 and try to stay away the rest of the week. I can easily fit a Quarter Pounder or a Whopper into my calories, but with a few accommodations (I no longer get fries, I hold the mayo, and if I have fewer calories I'll go for something smaller).0

I was addicted to fast food, I had it 4 or 5 times a week. Now I'm using that money to pay for a personal trainer instead.0

I don't get why people actually LIKE the food there. Except the desserts lol.
To me their only benefit is convenience. Other than that I think their food just tastes like *kitten*. I will never understand how mcdonalds gets so much business.0 -
Either stop buying it or preplan a meal that fits your calories and macros before you go.0

I wasn't addicted to the food so much as how easy it was to obtain. I hated preparing meals or getting my lunch together for work the next day. I hit the drive through 6-7 times a week, sometimes every meal of the day would be fast food. I didn't even think about it for the most part. When I started MFP I had to quit because the food just would not fit into my daily calorie allowance. I still have fast food breakfasts sometimes (I try to limit to once a week), and when I do I try to make little changes to lower the calories (ie removing the cheese from a sandwich). All I can really say to encourage is that it gets easier. It's much more about changing your habits surrounding what you eat, rather than just the food itself. For me it was not eating in my car, and making breakfast/lunch for work the night before.0

Buy food at the grocery store, plan your meals, leave your credit and debit cards at home, and always take your meals with you to work. Fast food was always my crutch when I didn't want to cook and didn't have any groceries. Since I make grocery shopping and food prep a huge priority, my fast food consumption has dropped off dramatically, much to the chagrin of my favorite restaurants.0

I agree with the "plan ahead" ideas-- go shopping, buy food, plan meals, and make it things you can get excited about so the fast food doesn't seem so enticing, if you really want to quit. But if you make yourself NEVER have it and you like it as much as you seem to, one day you're going to have a weak moment and get 6 big macs and totally go crazy My suggestion is to give yourself the option to go some days, but chose a lower-cal option, or whatever option makes it fit into your goal. For instance yesterday I had enough calories for a chick-fil-a sandwich (the original fried goodness) for dinner, which is not typical, so I got one. Just depends on your goals, and you have to plan ahead always!0

I find if I keep fresh food in the house i'm less likely to go out because I have to eat it before it spoils. When there's no food in the house, that's when fast food thoughts come. Home made meals can be really quick to make, especially if you do some prep. Good luck!0

I've eaten fast food about once a week while losing 85 lbs in a year, and now maintaining. The key for me is to never give in to the cravings. If I want some McDonalds, I'm not going to eat it now. I'm going to plan ahead and eat it a few days, when I can plan my daily food and fit it in. It might mean a smaller breakfast and dinner, and hitting the gym, but if you are aware of the calories and are good with portion control, it can fit.0

I have not totally given up fast food and have managed to lose weight. Make lighter side choices. Fazoli: Kids pasta with marinara, Zaxby's: grilled chicken breast, Dominos: thin crust pizza with veggies, Sonic: Big Treat-Corn Dog, etc. Just because you are on a "diet" does not mean you have to give it all up.0
