Sugars!! How important?

ok I'm in the middle of my second week for working out. I am having positive results in my weight through dieting and the P90X program. I started perusing the site and noticed the term Macro's being thrown around a lot. I'm getting better at balancing out my carb, protein, and fats macros but just found out there are a ton of others and most of them are kind of low but my sugars are always over.. Sometimes double the recommended. With that being said I went back through my diary and noticed If I didn't eat my orange or apple everyday for my snack I would be under my recommended sugars most every day.

Are these natural sugars that bad.. Should I find a replacement for my apple and orange.. Being about the only fruits I enjoy eating. Or is the focus more on processed sugars?

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated

Most people will tell you that unless you have a condition such as T2 diabetes, the total sugars don't matter very much.

I think the recommended sugar allowance on MFP is set low. I think it is based on the WHO recommended amount of sugar, but the WHO recommendation is based on refined sugar. MFP does not distinguish.

So, that all said, ignore the notice that you are going over your sugar allowance. You are fine. Maybe track fiber instead.

What I would look out for is added sugars (HFCS, cane syrup, etc) that are placed into processed foods. Fruit is very high in fiber and has a very low glycemic index so you should be just fine. Fruit juice, on the other hand, usually has a lot of the fiber removed and that raises the GI a bit.

Thanks for your quick replies, it makes me feel a little better about them in my diet. I tried to do a lot of homework on it and really did worry about changing what I was doing because it is working right now. I didn't want to change up to a different snack and risk the rate of progress or go backwards any..

    Thanks again

Sugar (All Natural or refined or whatever) is just a carb. Track your carbs and hit those goals and you should be good assuming no medical issues.

Unless you have a specific health issue (primarily diabetes where you take insulin, both T1 and T2) don't worry about sugars, just stay at or under your total carb target. Most people change their diary to track fiber instead of sugar because getting enough fiber is more beneficial to your health than occasionally getting too much sugar.

You have at least 45g/day of sugar, a couple of pieces of fruit shouldn't challenge that.

I've found that too much added sugar from processed foods/sweets causes an increase in acne, plus if I'm eating more than usual I'll start feeling more lethargic over time.

I try to keep an eye on what I'm eating so I can keep my added sugars down to help prevent both of those.

If your body doesn't act funny (if you will), then don't worry about the sugar as long as you're hitting that calorie goal :)

Eat the fruit! It's the processed sugars that do not make you feel full or contain the vitamins and nutrients found in fruit.
