    A high level of free sugars intake is of concern, because of its association with poor dietary quality and obesity. Free sugars contribute to the overall energy density of diets, and may promote a positive energy balance (This is from the actual guideline, not the summary)

    So, for those of us who eat a balance diet it's irrelevant.

    Yep^

    It is a problem for the obese population because they eat way more calories than they need.

    It's a correlation, not a causation. If they ate less calories, they'd eat less sugar.
