Fleetwood Mac isn't really 80's but it dawned on me during a run that most of their songs have the perfect rhythm to match my run.

Also when I first started running, I had this hilly 3 mile loop. I made it a goal to run the whole thing by Mother's Day starting in March. If I went one direction, I ended on a flat. If I went the other way, I ended with a big hill. The Saturday before Mother's Day, I went the big hill way and was actually running the whole thing. I came to the hill and told myself, don't let it stop you. I swear to God I had the "Eye of the Tiger" song in my head the whole way up that hill and I totally did the Rocky arms up, jumping around when I reached the top. I know these are two different movies...but Eye of the Tiger is way more motivating than "Gonna Fly Now"--or whatever that song is.

this is not a motivational song but i really like exercising to the beat Eurythmics Sweet Dreams are made of this 1983

I'm putting it on the list! I can hear that synth scale at the beginning really getting me going.

Since most of the 80s montage music has been mentioned, I'll just toss out some 80s stuff that would work for running no one has mentioned (that I've seen). Some of them have the added bonus that they kinda lyrically can apply to running (I feel the earth move under my feet...won't give up until I'm satisfied...etc). Many of them are kind of obscure. There's a lot that I use while running because it "works" that I wouldn't necessarily listen to at other times:

Vital Signs "The Boys and Girls are Doing it" (From soundtrack to BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE)
Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers "Swing the Mood"
    Love and Rockets "So Alive"
Martika "I Feel the Earth Move" (Carole King cover)
    Richard Marx "Satisfied"
    Motley Crue "Kickstart My Heart"
Tom Petty "Runnin' Down a Dream"
Todd Rundgren "Bang the Drum All Day"
    Rush "Superconductor"
    Stray Cats "Blast Off"
The Violet Burning "If You Let Me"
Rob Base and DJ EZ-Rock "It Takes Two"
    Camper Van Beethoven "Borderline"

  • Journey - don't stop believin

Additional lesser known 80s tunes for running:
Phil Keaggy "I'm Gonna Get You Now"
Public Enemy and Anthrax "Bring the Noise"

Who wants to throw some classic punk in the mix?

    Bitchin' Camaro - Dead Milkmen
I Did It My Way - Sid Vicious (charted in '78, but I love this *kitten* song so much it hurts)
    Minor Threat - Minor Threat
London Calling - The Clash (technically '79, but it was released in December, so I'm counting it)
    Rise Above - Black Flag
    I Don't Wanna Grow Up - Descendents
  • My playlist is full of 80's hits. You can't go wrong with AC/DC, Quiet Riot, Asia, The Police, Def Leopard, Whitesnake and yes I'll admit it I even have Cindy Lauper on my rotation.

Hell yeah Cyndi Lauper! Also, since we're on the female 80's singer topic...Pat Benatar Debbie Harry, & Annie Lennox (though I'm not sure she did anything solo in the 80's).
  • Have to admit when Girls just wanna have fun comes on it makes me want to just move :)

Oh yes, Cyndi Lauper! I love "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" as well! Also like Lita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly. Can't think of other songs by her except for that slow one Close My Eyes Forever... Joan Jet - I Love Rock 'n Roll. Good stuff! Brings back LOTS of memories!!

    Absolutely... :)

Some additional songs I find great for 'accompanying movement' --

Michael McDonald - No Lookin' Back (I also love listening to this song while driving on a highway, on a summer evening, as the sun is sinking into the sky), Ain't No Mountain High Enough

    Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody

    The Jacksons - Torture

Earth Wind & Fire - September, Boogie Wonderland

Kool & The Gang - Celebration, Misled

Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up)

Pointer Sisters - Jump (a song that adds some additional fun to a cardio burst of jumping rope ;) )

And fwiw, some songs I tend to prefer more for time on the bike, or when walking or running, and as a kind of 'background soundtrack' to letting my thoughts wander, and fostering an almost meditative quality to the experience --

    Danny Wilson - Mary's Prayer

Journey - Only The Young, The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love), If He Should Break Your Heart (90's)

    Pointer Sisters - Dare Me

Kool & The Gang - Fresh, Cherish

Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World

A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far Away)

Modern English - I Melt With You

Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years

Christopher Cross - Ride Like The Wind

Little River Band - The Night Owl

Brenda Fassi - Vulindlela (90's / South African)
