I need some serious help with food at work

I began my career as a deputy sheriff, supervising inmates in the county jail, a month and a half ago. I am allowed to eat whatever I want, even on post if I want to, as long as the bag I carry it in is see through. This has caused me to gain 5lbs in the past month after losing 109lbs. I have always been a boredom eater and being that I work overnights and am by myself from 11:45pm to 4:30am, this gives me a lot of time to stuff myself with lots of junk that makes me happy.
I do not want to go back to being that morbidly obese unhappy person. What are some yummy foods that are low calorie that I can snack on throughout a 12 hour shift? I have access to a fridge and microwave for 1 hour in the middle of my shift. I do not like nuts, any seafood, or Greek yogurt.
Please help me stay at a healthy weight!

This is high in protein which will help you stay full longer. This wrap is a tortilla called Xtreme wellness low carb high fiber, spread on it cream cheese chive flavor, you can add whatever you want like, chopped broccoli, shredded cheese, lettuce, different color bell pepper, tomato, and add lunch meat like ham and turkey, use several slices to make it thick and higher in protein. Roll it up and cut it into chunks for easier eating. I hope this helps0

Anyone else?0

I like dried fruit, beef/pork jerky, cereal bars, protein bars, Muller rice, prepackaged fruit salads, mini cheeses like Babybels, pitta bread/chopped veg and hummus... Some of those aren't low calorie, but they do fill you up for a few hours.0

Cut vegetables for sure. Recently, I've also been making a ton of grilled chicken on Sunday and cutting it into cubes and eating on it all week. I just switch up the marinade so I don't get bored.
Cheese, beef jerky, clementines, hummus and jicama are some other things I brought for this week.0 -
I made some hummus using canned butter beans. It was great. I don't like the texture of chickpeas. Anyways:
1 can drained large butter beans
1 tbsp. olive oil
1 tsp seasame oil
Cumin and cayenne to taste. I used about tsp each
Lemon juice. I used juice of 1/2 of a lemon
Blend and add water or chicken broth to thin out to right consistency.
I eat it with sliced cucumbers, carrots, peppers. It's also good in wraps.

This sounds really good, I am definitely going to try it. Thanks!0 -
Veggies. Maybe berries or an apple from time to time. But I'm also a boredom/stress eater, and seriously just trying to cut that out has been best for me. If you are eating for reasons other than hunger, I wouldn't worry about what's filling and would go for low calories, which means veggies mostly.0

beef jerky, quest bars, popcorn, vita tops muffins (100 calories), pb2 and toast0

You can eat meatballs cold People make turkey and pork "muffins" (also portable), I think this is the recipe

(also, congrats on the job )0 -
If you are boredom eating, can you do something else like take up knitting? Just to see if maybe you don't need to eat, but as long as your hands are busy?0

Think Thin High Protein Bars! Theyve got 2l0g of protein w no sugar, only 230 calories. I eat that and a triple zero oikos yogurt (also contains 10-15 grams protein) & I can go 8am-1pm at my desk job without getting hungry. I just discovered it this past week and bought more-0

*20 grams protein0

stop taking bags of food to work.
problem solved.0 -
I would suggest that taking your food to work is not causing you to gain weight, but eating too many calories for your activity level probably is. Is the issue that you are eating too much food which is available at work, or you are taking too much food with you?0

Well, OP is eating too many calories via taking foods to work, so it's a distinction without a difference imo. This is how the problem looks for her.0 -
I work Event Security and am on my feet for sometimes 6 hours or more and with little chance for a break sometimes. So what I started doing is before an event I eat a Tortilla...my recipe is simple enough. I use Flatout Tortillas (usually the one with Flaxseed but they have different varieties), I put spinach, sliced turkey breast, Crystal Farms Liquid Egg whites and cheese). Heat it up. It roughly has something like 30 grams of protein and only 400 calories. And it will keep me full during my entire event.

This sounds awesome!0 -
This will initially sound weird but TRY IT first...
Carrot sticks and celery can be a bit boring on their own...but I've found that with a good salsa, they're pretty tasty. Salsa itself is low-cal unless you get some sugary variation...it's usually that big bag of tortilla chips you have WITH the salsa that's the problem.
And you're getting antioxidants from the tomato as a bonus...
We also just got a "YoNana" machine...that lets you make soft-serve-ish "ice cream" from bananas and also sorbet from frozen fruit. I've yet to try the banana-based stuff yet but we did sorbet with it yesterday and it was TASTY. So if you want to invest in one, that's an option possibly...0 -
Are you getting enough sleep when you aren't at work? When I worked nights, I found that I was a terrible snacker because I wasn't getting enough sleep during the day and I felt like I had to get energy from somewhere to stay awake.
I like to drink something hot like tea. That makes me feel fuller. Popcorn is a great option since it is pretty low calorie and you can eat a lot. Plus, it is basically a whole grain which fills you up. Maybe take some cheese and turkey pepperoni to go with it?0 -
Yeah I like to mix it up. Sometimes I add bacon to it or Ham instead of Turkey. It takes all of 5 mintues to make.0
-
And I also agree that if you're eating out of boredom rather than hunger, try and find something you can do other than eat in between mealtimes/snacktimes..reading/knitting/plyometrics (those hand-squeezer things), whatever...0
-
The question about sleep is a really good one. I find I'm MUCH more inclined to snack when I'm low on sleep, as it's a natural way to try to keep yourself aware (probably also related to boredom eating).0
-
Break that habit! I started by telling myself that I was no longer a person who ate out of boredom. No pressure - I just said "Ok, I just don't do that any more." And each day that I did not snack out of boredom, it got easier. Now, after a year or so, I can honestly say, when I do get bored, food is not my first thought. When I feel like having a snack, I take a minute to stop and think about why I want to eat something: Bored, hungry, stressed - and then go from there. Bored = no eat. Hungry = yes eat.0
-
I agree about not taking a bunch of food to work - just take enough for dinner and a snack or two, or skip the bigger 'meal' & just take a bunch of smaller snacks to keep you satisfied through your shift. If you have access to hot water, I would also take tea bags & sip on that all night. I have to similarly limit myself when I have a full day on campus. It'd be easy for me to load my bag with food, but if I only take what I really need then I force myself to stay on track. Actually, I think you probably have it easier than I do since I have access to restaurants, coffee shops, & convenience stores on campus that I have to avoid!
I keep lean cuisines and lean pockets on hand for situations like this. Sandwiches also make a good, low cal on-the-go meal depending on the bread & toppings. Some of my favorite snacks are pretzels, fruit, veggies and hummus, and string cheese.
I think once you start limiting what you take to work you'll actually find that you're thankful for the job keeping you busy and on track! I enjoy when I have full days on campus because it structures my day & I'm stuck eating what I brought, rather than being tempted to munch all day if I'm home! Good luck!0 -
I agree with many of the other suggestions, but probably stick mostly to protein and vegetables. Plan ahead and take just the amount you need, not more. Don't forget to drink water.
You mention boredom eating. Are you bored? Maybe you are turning to food and need something to occupy your mind during the quiet times. What work do you have that you can do? If you are not busy with job related tasks, would it be permissible to do other things? What do you like to read? Do you have any craft work you like to do? Do you knit, crochet? Would some relatives appreciate letters you could write?
Hope that helps. It is so easy to gain weight with a new job. It has happened to me, too. But congratulations on your weight loss and good for you for tackling this before it went too far. You can do it!0 -
Almonds. Just a handful - full of good fats and proteins. Hard boiled eggs, chopped up into a spinach salad. Tablespoon of peanut butter. Another vote here for hummus, or using salsa with your celery and carrots.
And add me as another voice to the knitting/crocheting group. I knit. It keeps my hands busy and quiets my brain to focus on other things (when I'm knitting something particularly easy, or have done several times - like socks)0 -
Are you missing any meals during the day? If so, only take enough food to make up that meal. Otherwise, don't take food. You can't overeat if extra food isn't there. I have no experience with the type of job you're doing, but try to find something else to do instead of the hand-to-mouth food thing.0

You've lost 109lbs so you obviously know something about leading a healthier lifestyle. If you're bored, find something to do... read, do lunges, squats, stay active. I'm assuming there's lots of walking involved in your job, maybe less when the inmates are asleep, so take that time to do some body weight exercises.
Healthy snacks (for when you're hungry, not bored): bananas, hummus and veggies, apple with peanut butter, berries and yogurt, turkey pepperettes0 -
I always cut up fresh fruits and veggies that I keep in zip lock bags in my desk. I also eat nuts, beef jerky, cut up chicken breast, and browned hamburger mixed with canned diced tomatoes with Italian seasoning and maybe some melted mozzarella.
That's awesome that you've lost 109 pounds! That's a huge accomplishment!0 -
I eat when I'm bored, and I love sweets. I understand the urge to eat when you're bored. If I were in your place and I didn't take a bag, I'd give into the vending machine.
It's not nutritious, but I've been eating pickles as a snack. It helps. I also find that a spoonful of Peter Pan whipped PB helps a lot. It's lower cal/sugar and tastes better than regular PB. I always see recommendations for PB2, but I wouldn't buy it because it takes out all of the good fats and oils that make PB filling and a diet food. It also helps me to constantly have water or tea around me. I love my sweet tea, but since I can't have it I have to use Splenda. I know there's a lot of controversy around artificial sweeteners, but I can't drink unsweet tea so that's my only option.
Read all of the labels on everything you buy taking careful notice of the serving size. It might help to prepare your nightly bag with a calorie limit. That way you don't stress too much when you eat everything in it.
Knitting is also a good idea, but you probably don't want to do that in front of inmates, right?. Maybe knit some skull blankets? Definitely find something to do with your hands as Katiebear_81suggested.0
