walking v/s elliptical

I have lower back pain most days. I am about 100 lbs. overweight, so my guess is my back pain is due to stress on my back & spine from the extra weight. My son's doctor told him that walking is good for your back. But i can't walk much on pavement due to my heel spur. I have an elliptical machine. Will working out on the elliptical be as good for my back as walking?

I don't know about the elliptical comparison, but I've noticed that when I walk on concrete it tends to make my feet and legs more sore. When I've went and walked on the high school track, it doesn't do that. I guess there's a little cushion to the track maybe? Sorry, I know that's not much help, but it may be worth a try0
