Hot yoga- calories burned?

Hello

How is it that, after a 90 min hot yoga class I feel utterly exhausted but, according to MFP, I've only burned about 250 cals? Does anyone know how the calories burned in a v active hot class compare to typical yoga? It seems a hard thing to gauge given how much styles of yoga vary. Is there any way I can accurately measure the calories I use?

Thanks

How many would you like? You're standing still, holding poses for 2 minutes each. There's not going to be much calorie burn doing isometric holds. Exhaustion, sure, but exhaustion doesn't equal calorie burn.

Hot yoga doesn't burn significantly more calories than regular yoga. There's just lower risk of injury and easier to get deeper because of warmer muscles. At least that's the theory. Of course, you will be more exhausted after hot yoga, but that's true of anybody doing anything on a hot day. You've lost a lot of liquid. Your body wants that stuff back.
  • I do hot yoga 3 times a week and completely agree... It's exhausting BUT does not get your heart rate up there like true cardio does. That being said I walk for an hour on my days of hot yoga and on opposite days do strength/cardio intervals. That works best for me for mind/body balance.

I think yoga in general isn't meant to necessarily be about calorie loss, but about flexibility and stilling your mind and focusing on breathing. That kind of thing. Which is all very important, too!
