What's the best way to kickstart this weight loss??

Ive heard so many different things when it comes to first starting a diet. One is "you want to start on a clean slate" meaning to get rid of all the toxic already in your body. I've heard of juice cleanses, soup diets, and even laxatives (this is a no go in my book) Should I just start off with the old diet and exercise or is there a way to kick start my weight loss and get things going? Any thing that has worked for you? I've heard the juice cleansings work great. Any tips??

Don't worry about clenses, set an appropriate calorie goal, weigh solid foods and measure liquids, log everything every day, go on your merry way and lose weight.

Good old diet and exercise. There's no toxins that any juice cleanse is going to remove that your liver and kidneys can't do already, and it's not going to make you lose weight any quicker (not fat anyway, might make you lose more water weight, but you'll just put that back on as soon as you start eating proper food again). And I've seen lots of people say that they've never felt full on cleanses like that, or that it's left them with no energy.
Some people find that doing a cleanse like that helps them mentally, as in it makes them feel like they're really starting a new lifestyle and helps them be more motivated for it. If you find that might be the case for you then you could try it, but it really is just a placebo.0 -
Thanks for the tips. I found them very useful. I've heard good things from the cleanses but I don't think it's for me. I'd rather eat salad all day instead of a juice. Maybe it's a mental thing thanks again. Have a great day0

Totally agree with the above statements. I would also add many people want to jump start but small changes seem to work the best (walking more, having water with all your meals etc.) then when the moment is right you can try something that is more difficult.0

I have never tried a clense, but I am pretty sure I would want to kill someone, or myself, if I did one.
Most of the "great" things you hear are short term results, most clenses lead to dropping alot of water weight and gut fill, so of coarse there user feels like they got great results from it. I would like to hear what they have to say a week after they are eating normal food again....0 -
I don't think any kind of cleanses, fasts, etc are necessary or even helpful. Cutting back on sodium will help you start losing the excess water weight faster, though. If it's feasible to exercise outdoors some of the time, I always find that helps psychologically. Get some fresh air and sunshine.0

I think the whole cleansing things don't work if you're going to feel like the diet is very hard effort. When I first start losing weight, I ate what I usually ate, but I just measured and logged it, to make sure I was within calories. I still lost the weight and I wasn't giving up foods that I really like. Sure, in the long term, I should probably cut out crisps.. But they taste so good and it's nice to have treat that fits within your calories.0

Consciously throw away everything you have ever heard / think you know about dieting. Every cleanse, detox, fad, programme, food restriction, supplement, sacrificing goats at midnight on a mountaintop - get rid of them all
FOCUS
on weighing and accurately the calories of every single thing you eat to your calorie defecit
on moving more and getting fitter and stronger (not necessary for actual weight loss but the results will be so much better0 -
I think the biggest step is just to start. Don't make it any more complex than it needs to be. Start right now.
I don't know if cleanses are beneficial or not, but I do know that if Calories In < Calories Out, you will lose weight, whether you cleanse or not.0 -
In addition to the above posters comments about cleanses (they don't work...you have kidneys that work just fine), in my opinion, the best thing you can do is to make a plan.
I've found it's a lot easier to have success if I'm able to meal plan, plan out my workouts, and make sure I'm surrounded by food that fits in with my goals and that I enjoy.
I make grocery lists for the upcoming week every Friday and Saturday morning. Then Saturday morning, after I leave the gym, I'm armed with my list and head off to the grocery store. I buy enough stuff for the week, fitting in any obligations/budget and time restrictions/etc. that I may have.
Once I get home on Saturday, I'm usually too tired and just want to shower or I have stuff going on. So on Sunday, I meal prep my face off. I crank up the music, and prep any meats and veggies for the upcoming week.
Since I'm super busy during the week, having things prepped takes some stress out of figuring out what's for dinner when I'm exhausted from work and the gym.
A couple of other things I found that works for me:
- I set out my gym clothes in my bag before I go to work. Grab the bag as well as my blender bottles (I take a pre-workout and protein supplement on workout-days) and toss those in my car.
- Buy a food scale. You'll be surprised at how much/little you're eating.
- Be kind to yourself. Don't feel like you've "fallen off the wagon" by enjoying a night out or eating cake. Cake is wonderful. So is wine.
- Set small goals for yourself. Meeting them feels AMAZING and I feel that breaking down a larger goal into smaller, more manageable goals energizes me for the road and journey ahead. And when you meet a goal? Treat Yo Self!
And above all, remember that weight loss isn't linear, nor will it happen overnight. If you've never run a mile, you won't go from couch to marathon in a week. Nor will you reach your goal weight overnight (whatever that may be). It took time to gain weight, it will take time to lose it.

This. Just start. Right now. Did you log what you ate so far today? Yes? Perfect! Can you get in some exercise? even a bit? Yes? Perfect! Do that for the rest of the day, and then do the same thing tomorrow, and until you achieve desired results.

What worked for me is troubleshooting and making small changes every couple weeks based on what I learned the week before. So my biggest tip is just get used to logging all your food for a couple weeks. See if you identify any weak areas in your eating patterns. Your own patterns will point to what needs to change.
Trying this diet or that is like trying to wear someone else's shoes. It doesn't fit, it is a little painful, and there's a very good chance you'll give it up.0 -

Best thing to do is to actually start measuring and logging what you eat daily. Hit your calorie goal and don't go over it. Get use to doing this and you'll be fine.
Lift weights!!! and Go to the gym, I don't get why people are scared of the gym... At one point that person who you think is "advanced" didn't know anything either... and if you're worried about *kitten* well there are more at the malls and movie theaters .. they're everywhere ..get use to it!! do you drive??? *kitten* and idiots all over the roads!!!0 -

get a food scale to weigh all solids and as many liquids as possible
set MFP for one pound per week loss
eat to the number that MFP gives you
if you want to exercise then find something you like and do it.
realize there are no good or bad foods, there is just food that fuels your body. So while it is important to eat nutrient dense foods, there is nothing wrong with adding in some ice cream, cookies, etc....
and anyone pushing a cleanse on you is just trying to steal your money.0 -
I may get some pushback for this, but I had to plan for the day to start my new lifestyle. I had to plan my workouts, my meals, my time, my grocery list. I knew I wanted to change my lifestyle, but wasn't sure how to do it.....or what site, program or anything else I was going to use. I also had to get rid of all the bad stuff in the house. What I personally did...made the decision to create an account and start making lifestyle changes.. I combed through all the info on here during work.... I logged my food the day I did all this for a baseline of what I was eating, but the above took about 2 hours time. (the planning aspect). When I got home from work that night, I did the rest.... planned everything and ran to the grocery store. It's harder for some if they have a family to take care of as you need to plan for the care of children if they are young.
I may not be the norm. I've been going on here for 50 days today, Losing slowly and I still plan everything. I found if I plan and make things a priority it works better for me. When I plan my gym time, nothing gets in the way.
Remember, this is just what has worked for me. Not everyone works or feels the same.0 -

It all depends on what you want. Do you want to understand your sleep patterns? Do you want something that syncs with MFP? Will you want to get technical with your calorie burn? Something that helps you pace your runs? You may want to start with something cheaper until you know. I only want to track steps so I am happy with a FitBit Zip.0
