get rid of soda!

I worked at a fast food restaurant when I was 15 and developed a love for dr. pepper! Because I was young, I didn't see the harm in it until I was about 19. After reminding myself about all of the sodium, sugar (and who knows what else) that was in it everytime I opened a can, I decided to quit. It only took me about 1 month to stop thinking bout ordering it at restaurants or buying it at gas stations, and after two months, I didn't even like it anymore ( the carbonation especially became too overwhelming!) I lost 11 lbs in 8 months without any other dietary or physical changes in my life! It's such an unnecessary indulgence! I recently encouraged my sister to kick her coca-cola habit, and she's feeling better and safely losing weight!

Think of how much healthier your teeth will be, the money you'll save! Even the diet sodas are awful! WebMD.com says that "for regular (not diet) soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming obese or overweight is increased 26% for 1/2 of a can of soda per day." Not even a whole can! As for the diet soda drinkers... the risk jumps to 36.5% for only 1/2 of a can!

Get rid of it! It's not worth the trouble! what I've found that I enjoy is a carbonated water beverage called Cascade Ice. It comes in about 7 flavors (that I am aware of) and has 0 carbs 0 fat 0 sugar and only 2 calories/ 8 oz. I can find it in the grocery store for about a dollar a bottle.

Let's kick the habit together!

Sounds good. I haven't had a soda (diet or regular) since January 6th of this year (I was told "I bet you couldn't go without drinking a soda", and me being stubborn, decided to do it for a whole year). Honestly, I don't miss them as much as I thought I would.

My substitute has been Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus or Poweraid Zero. Both have been great and have no calories.

I have to completely agree with you. Several years ago, I could easily drink a 2 litre of Pepsi a day, if not more. I was at 189 lbs (and under 5 foot tall). I gave up pepsi but drank sweet tea. Not much better but it has been easier to give up tea than it was soda. About 4 or 5 weeks ago, I started getting some major dental work done. My dentist laid it on the line, my high sugar diet was destroying my teeth. I decided to give up the sugars. A decision that is changing my life. I'm down 16 pounds, because if I didn't drink sweet I could not go through mcdonalds to get it, then from there went all fast food, then I found MFP and the rest, as they say, is history.

I've gotten rid of it completely. I drank Diet Dr Pepper for a while, then just figured it wasn't worth the nasty stuff in it. Now I drink Crystal Lite and sometimes skim milk.

I occassionally (once a month or so) indulge in a coke slurpee from 7-11 though. I used to get the big 40oz ones, but now all syrupy stuff in it me sick to my stomach, so I get the teeny ones.

I agree... A few years back when I did drink soda and ice-tea I decided to just stop drinking them and I lost about 10 pounds by just doing that and nothing else. Back then I didn't know that was reason but now I do. They didn't really quench my thirst anyways. Once in a while I'll get a rasberry tea when we go out to eat but other then that it's mostly water for me.

Same here for me. I used to drink diet pepsi or diet dr pepper DAILY at least a 2 ltr a day. I gave it up in the beginning of Sept and dont even miss it. Now all I drink is water, and an occasional lipton brisk tea.

Get it out of the house, don't buy more. If you don't have it - you can't drink it. Think of all the money you'll save by drinking water!
  • Oh God, I was a coke addict. I would have at least 2 20 ounce bottles a day, plus the huge big gulp you can get at the convenience store, sometimes it would be more. I quit cold turkey, and I was witch with a b instead of a w for more than a week! I have been off the sauce probably since july it would of been june but I did get weak one day and had some soda but got really sick afterwards. I feel so much better, I used to get really bad heartburn, to point of throwing up but that's gone and I would also cough up alot of phelgm ( I know, gross), but that's gone too. Now, all I drink is water with the occasional tea, I don't even miss the soda anymore.

sometimes the best way to give something up if you feel you can't or shouldn't go cold turkey...is cut back... drink 10 cans a day? then drop it down a few....but with all the sugar and caffeine it contains, it is rather like a drug so cold turkey sure will hit your body hard......so for some cutting back is the healthy route.....

someone suggested not bringing it in the house... might be another option for you....drink it on occastion but only outside the house..... then taper off from even purchasing any.

How about you start a pop fund piggy bank....each time you drink one you see how much money it's costing you.....might just amaze you and rattle something in your head, sometimes we do something even if we know it's not healthy but once we figure out the money we'd save...POOF...we can then give it up....... funny how us humans work isn't it!:noway:

    Best of luck to you:drinker:

They need a little soda-money-saver ticker like they have for smokes.

I eat cleanly, drink plenty of water and exercise 7 days a week. I also do not eat read meat or loads of carbs. I like diet soda and I will continue to drink it. To those who don't, god bless you. As for me, I will have my 1-2 sodas a day. Yay!

BTW--I continue to tone and lose weight.
