Hello!

I'm about to start at another daycare job, and I want to make sure that I do a good job. I was thinking about it and realized that I'm not sure what abilities moms and daycare directors look for in their employees. I show up on time and make sure I'm stay attentive to the children... but what specifics do you look for in a child care taker?

Patience is HUGE! Also a genuine passion for the well-being of all children.

As a daycare owner, love, being able to connect and play with the children, getting on the floor to play cars or being the tunnel for them to drive under....a person I feel comfortable with

I like it when daycare providers interact with the kids, not just watch them. They need to be creative and loving and caring, it's nice for a Mom to drop her child off and have them go running to play instead of clinging to her. I want to see them dressed for the job, jeans and sneakers, not dresses and high heels. Good Luck, Lynn

Flexibility and doing what needs to be done, not just noticing it (that goes for changing diapers, cleaning any type of messes, set-up, clean-up, covering for a co-worker, anything). Also, positive interactions with all children on all days, regardless of everything!
    Have fun!

(sorry, just erasing a double post)
  • Hi,
I'm a ECE with the Boys and Girls Club of Canada. As a childcare provider you need to ensure that the children are happy, healthy and safe. Provide the children with enriching experiences that; promote cognitive and physical development as well as encouraging positive relationships with your co-works, the children and their parents. You should prepare a variety of activities ( goop, painting, musical experenices etc.)
A good thing to keep in mind is that daycare food is high in healthy fats and carb's because thats what the children need for their physical development but we don't need it! I gained almost 10 pounds during my first 6 months of work.

As a former day care teacher for 5+ years, I think it's important to remember the job is almost as much about your relationship with the parent as it is with their child. Some parents are nervous, upset, or feeling guilty about leaving their child with someone they don't know. (Now that I am a parent, I can truly understand that feeling.)

As busy as day care teachers are, it is easy to brush off parents who want extra reassurance and attention. However, devoting that extra time to talk with parents, geting to know them and letting them get to know you, makes a big difference. Letting them know how great their child is and how much fun he/she has during the day relieves those negative emotions that a parent may have. At my center, the neediest/most difficult parents ended up being my favorites and I think I was their favorite teacher.

I also think being energetic, enthusiastic, warm, nuturing, and willing to go the extra mile are qualities that parents and daycare directors love to see in teachers.

Safe, healthy practices, and an understanding of child development and how to guide behaviors appropriately. Speaking in grammatically correct ways and using all sorts of language with the children. A welcoming lap and a loving heart.
