HELP!! Keeping it going while overseas...

Hi - I was wondering if anyone else is in a similar position to me and therefore had any good hints and tips.
I work away from home on a regular basis; sometimes for a few days at a time but more common is to travel there and back in a single day (4am start & 11pm finish....eek!!) Its pretty much always overseas though; France, Germany, Spain and even this week the Netherlands for 2 days. It may sound good but trust me; the novelty soon wears off!!!

My question is how do you keep yourself on track? When I'm staying away its a little easier as I can take my kit and work out in the hotel gym or if I don't have enough time I just use my resistance band which is light and small enough to take with me. When it is just the day though it is CONSTANT travel (sometimes 4 flights in one day) and then sat in meetings. Plus on the food side of things it is difficult when you have airport food and work canteens to contend with or evening social meals with colleagues.

I have thought about small things to do like walk around the airport between flights but that is not always possible as I usually need that time to open the laptop and get some work done!!! Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated as I sometimes feel like all my good work is undone by these few days away each week..... Thank you!! Vx

I used to fly a lot, if you give airlines notice, they often provide low calories / healthy eating options for their inflight meals which helps.

Also, I carry things like trail mix which is fairly lightweight and is always on hand if I need a meal. I tend to grab food before I get to the airport, a bread roll, a few pieces of salami an apple and a banana keeps me going during long flight connections and stops me wandering around looking for tempting stuff I shouldn't be eating - and of course it's far cheaper.

Good luck, it's not always easy to find healthy food when you're travelling.

Evening social meals with colleages, how about checking out restaurant guides beforehand, so when talk turns to where to meet for the evening meal, you're able to suggest somewhere that does relatively healthy food, eg sushi rather than Indian.

I think you also underestimate how many extra cals you will burn on a long day like that! If there is an 'Eat' at the airport - they have loads of yummy choices which keep you going and are nice and healthy. If you are prone to snacking, stock up in advance on healthy snacks so you don't succumb to the less healthy snacks.

I live between Gibraltar and Spain - I quite often have dishes that are not on this site, or I am not even sure of what they are - but as I am in a social environment it's rude to not at least have a bit! In those situations I still try to hazard a guess at what it all was and put it into the food diary to at least have an idea of cals and fat consumed.

I also think the more you exercise, the more energy you will find you put into everything, and those walks around the airport will become brisker. Most important thing is it's not always about how long you exercise, but the intensity. If you can even squeeze in a fast paced walk/run (even if it lasts only 10 mins) you are sure to reap benefits than if you had not at all. That way you can put in a little work time and a little you time!

Just some ammateur advice. Hope it helps a little..

If they have travelling walkways at any of the airports, you can always run the wrong way on those, I did it once on a really long one because I realised I'd got onto the wrong and I was in a hurry; it was a great workout, damn near killed me by the time I got back to the end. Attracted a few frowns though!

Oh, and you know that roller carryon case? Carry it everywhere instead, it burns loads of calories!
