This! Metabolism is, in a nutshell, the calories you need to maintain your weight in a coma in a hospital bed. That's what metabolism really is, and there is a surprisingly small range that people have even taking height into consideration because after the brain and liver take the lion's share of the calories you need, everything else in your body sustains itself on very little.
Your body produces heat when it digests food. How much heat depends on the food. Protein produces a lot of heat. That's where people get this (misguided) idea that eating less causes the "metabolism to slow down," because obviously your body isn't producing heat from digestion when it's not digesting. They neglect, however, to realize that this still means you come out ahead by just not eating the calories in the first place.
