How to start running?

I want to start running. I seriously can only run for a minute and then feel like i'm going to die. I don't want to be able to run a 50 million marathon or anything, just to be able to run and not look like a dying cow having to stop every minute. How would be the best way to step into running? Thanks!

keep putting on your shoes and getting out there!! Couch to 5k is actually a pretty decent program if you're looking for a program.. I've done both ways.. and regardless you will make no progress w/o getting out there and pushing yourself!0 -
C25K like they said, I started this past friday, its really good, I couldn't finish the first workout but today I did it my third attempt and completely finished workout number 1, THeres apps for it for ipods and smartphones, so that is definitely a helpful way to start!!0

Don't try to run miles your first time out, even you were once a track star Try walk intervals. Google Jeff Galloway as well as Couch25K programs...lots of good information on how to start running slowly and safely.
I started out doing 15 seconds of running with a minute or two of walking...now up to running about 10 minutes at a time and yesterday ran a mile without stopping...I just started in February at 41 years old and about 40 pounds overweight (have since lost almost 25 pounds) so trust me, if I can start running (and enjoy it!) anyone can!

yeah just follow the c25k thing. im mid way through week 5 and i couldnt run a min before!0

If you are serious about running, first get yourself some good running shoes (find stores that check your running gait). Then download the couch to 5K programme as advised before.
I started at the end of February and I'm loving it (and I HATE running!!!).

Try the Couch to 5k training program (a search on line will pop one up for you). It has training for both treadmill or road running. Training in a walk/jog cycle will help you to build up your endurance helping you to run longer and a way to commit to is is to sign up for a 5k 9-12 weeks away from when you want to start running. The program also tells you when to increase your runs and decrease your walks so you're running more by the end.
I started jogging as a way to control my asthma and seriously could only jog for a minute or two before I'd have to walk. I started the C25K program on my treadmill but I love jogging outside better since I get to control my pace better and tend to jog longer because of it.

I actually use podrunner and it's really awesome because it helps with pacing as well since you run/walk to the beat. Podrunner Intervals are available for free on iTunes. Here is their website:

Like everyone else is saying Couch to 5k...the intervals will develop your endurance. I still have a lot of work to do...I started couch to 5k, but didn't have enough time to finish it the right way before my first 5k which was yesterday. So for the last 3 weeks before I started just running for as long as I could, then I would walk until I felt "normal" again, and then run again for a total of 30 minutes or so or 2 miles or so until I was actually able to get through the 3.1 mile amount for a 5k. I had to walk some in my 5k yesterday...mostly those darn hills. I am going to focus on doing hill work for the next few weeks and hope to find another 5k to do in a month. Anyhow, totally rambling. I will probably do the full program again as I go along to build my endurance. If you have a smartphone there is a free app which has the Couch to 5k program set up so an alarm goes off for you each time you are supposed to switch from running to walking. It is awesome! You can still play music at the same time!0

I had a friend injure herself by starting and stopping too often when she tried to pick up running. Just keep it a very, very, very slow pace at first. Gradually build up. Listening to music or running outside can help distract you from the terrible feeling. I still feel like crap for the first mile on most days.

I started walking, when i got to the stage I was walking 3 or 4 miles, I decided to just to jog a little, then more!! I have just registered to do the Great South Run in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. It will be a massive acheivement for me. If I can be of any help let me know0
