Fat man needs help

Long time since I have been on here and I really want to get myself going again.
Oct 2013 I realised I was a fat mess and didn't want to get married that way. I set myself a goal and smashed it so I set another and smashed that! I became obsessed and lost 5 and a half stone. I was slimmer than when I was about 18. I am 6ft 6 so have always "carried it well" apparently.
So the excuses for why I am back here and a little bit fatter than before is down to a number of things.
1) I became obsessed to the point I went to the gym twice a day and I guess could never keep that up full-time... I worked on getting to the week before the wedding and basically lived up my wedding and honeymoon to the point I had what I wanted... I had restricted myself to chicken and rice/chicken and veg for months and the food/beer tasted amazing ha
2) shortly after the trip of a lifetime for our honeymoon we came back to a very ill mother in law. Me and my wife spent loads of time helping her and trying to get her healthy via private car but unfortunately she passed away a less than 2 months later... This led to so much pain obviously and having to look after the rest of the family (her dad and brother) was really hard.
3) her dad became ill and needed a hip replacement so we spent most of the winter at his trying to look after him
4) we had the amazing news we are expected our first child... This had been really difficult because my wife wishes she had her mum here to help her and they had an amazing relationship so feels the loss now more than ever.
Anyway the last year has been really difficult and I have put going to the gym and eating healthly right down in the pecking order (people might say why and I remember thinking it was easy when it was a priority).
Anyway I just thought I would get this out here and hopefully a few friends added to keep me going. I think having people look put for your posts always helped me before. I used to feel more accountable and I want to give this a real go.
I work from home 3 days a week now which has left me pretty much sitting in my office on those days so I decided a run was needed today to kick me off.
It was laughable... 1 mile and I had to walk the rest... It hurt! I could hardly breathe and my back and legs ached from lugging all this extra weight around!
I need to sort this out now... Cant wait to be playing football in the park when my little boy is here... Need to get fit now ;-)
Cheers for reading and feel free to add me

Good for you for getting back on track!
You can't do a good job of taking care of other people unless you are taking good care of yourself, so it makes sense to set aside some time to work on fitness, even when you are busy.0 -
At least you realize you need to get back on track. It's always nice to go back into this journey knowing what you and your body are capable of. Just keep doing what you were doing before but make it work for your CURRENT lifestyle. Good luck to you!0

Congratulations on your wedding!
I think a lot of us do this: lose for something specific, then re-gain. It's only when you go for the long-term (IMO, I'm no final authority, that's for sure) that we really lose and sustain that loss.
Maybe choose a middle of the road this time rather than a program you will just eventually burn out on.
Good luck - you sound like you have a real go get 'em attitude - so I think you will!0 -
You two sound like a lovely couple. You've been giving and giving from the day you got married.
You will work up to your former fitness level. The body responds amazingly fast. Put this jogging stroller on your wish list.

Wow what a roller coaster of emotions. Congrats on the wedding and congrats on the baby!! I totally understand where you are coming from as far as trying to work SO hard right before the wedding. My wedding is next month and I can't wait til I take a few weeks off where I don't have to worry about the gym, but I don't want to gain my weight back so I've been telling my self I MUST CONTINUE even after the wedding.
Anyway, don't worry, if you set your mind to it you will be back in no time. And don't feel about about the mile run, walking, running, jogging is better than nothing. We all start somewhere! You know you've done it once and you can do it again! Good luck0 -
Thank you very much for the comments guys... I have set myself a realistic target of 3 runs a week at the moment Mon/Wed/Fri when I work from home... As you know the first run was a mile and I thought I was going to have a baby I ached that much... Well today I did 2.5 mile! Really chuffed and if I can keep improving I can get back on track.
I agree with the comments about being more realistic. I got so low on such a hardcore routine it isn't possible to keep up without the same routine. I half halfed my goal and want to lose 2.5 stone. Feels nice to not have such a crazy big goal to chase especially when I am not threating about gettig there for a certain date.
Thanks again ;-)0 -

Definitely! I quit running (or really even exercising) for several years due to a family situation similar to yours. When I recently picked it up again, I was amazed at how quickly I progressed with endurance. It really didn't take me as long to build endurance the second time as it did the first time I started.
Plus, you kind of have to re-learn the pace and breathing pattern that works best for you.0 -
Yesterday is history and tomorrow is the future. The important thing is what you will do with your future? Hopefully the excuses will stop and action begin.0

I work at home most of the time and one little thing I did was to move some dumbbells up to the spot next to my desk. Now, if I'm reading a document, editing some copy, or just doing research, I'll grab a dumbbell and knock out a set of tricep extensions or other isolation arm lifts. In the kitchen waiting for the water to boil for my tea? 10 bodyweight squats and some pushups.
Good luck to you in your health and with your new and growing family! Oh, and if you have access to a pool, you may want to go swimming with your wife! When I was pregnant, I felt HUGE and miserable all the time...being in water was such a relief of my pregnancy symptoms!0 -
I am sorry for your loss and happy for your joy!
I was always one of those fat happy women, until I had my little one, I realized that if I wanted him to be a better person than I was, that I was going to have to become that person
I tried and stumbled for the past 2.5 years and now I'm trying again (and succeeding this time!) because people better than me don't give up when the going gets tough. I see it in him too. He always tries something before asking for help. So unlike old me.
So yeah, that was ranty, you can do it though dude, but this time don't just work for a date, work for life, cause that kids gonna outlive you and s/he deserves a healthy and happy parent even when they're 60!0
