A strange thing happened on my walk today...

So I've recently kicked my walks up a notch in terms of length and intensity, and the past week have been doing a 10ish km circuit that involves several kilometres of bush trail. The first few kms are uphill (change in elevation of 250 metres), winding up the side of a valley, then along the top is gently undulating before winding back down the other side of the valley. I knew I was going a bit slower today, just generally lacking in energy, but then when I was going along the top I started to jog. I do not jog. I have always maintained that one should only run when chased by lions or zombies. I didn't jog far, maybe a kilometre at best in three separate bursts, but still, I jogged. I think I'm equal parts ashamed and proud of my self :p.

I suspect I looked somewhat like this doing it though!

OMG I love it when this happens! :D Just those crazy bursts that make you want to push yourself and you dont even really think about it - you just do it.

Like you, I was not in the mood to workout/tired, but went a head and did it anyway. Turned out to be one of my best workouts and while doing my lifting, I decided to throw some (of my least favourite Insanity move) switch kicks just because of a crazy burst of energy.

    You rock! Keep jogging!

It's cause hills make you high. And they're alive with the sound of music. Glad you had fun ;)

This track is very much alive with the sound of birds! I've actually stopped wearing my ipod while I'm in the bush so I can enjoy them (also helps with hearing the mountain bikers coming so I can get out of their way!!).

I was still slightly slower overall than the other day, even with my burst of energy, but oh well :).

I bet you'll be getting a pair of trail runners soon!

And look at all my shiny Map My Walk awards! Unfortunately I'm unlikely to ever take out Queen of the Mountain for the course I did today cos the woman who has it was clearly jogging (her time is 13 mins faster than mine, and while I can probably shave a few more minutes off it walking, I doubt I could do 13), but I reckon I can totally take out QOM on the one I'm currently 4th on.

Funny thing is, the trainers I have are trail runners! I only realised this the other day when I was looking to see if they were still available because they need to be replaced (there have been a couple of other times in my life I've attempted the jogging thing, it's never lasted long).

Sometimes just getting there is more important than how fast ya get there. Or at least I tell myself that when I take my short legged 1 mph walking dog out for a long walk.

But i want awards dammit!! :p (yeah, little bit of an overachiever here...).

I have friends visiting from the US (I'm in NZ) for the next few days and we're going to do some big walks while they're here. It occurred to me the other day that I'll actually have time to check out the scenery because we'll be going at a more leisurely pace!

This is the view from the top looking out to the harbour :). You can see why I like this track!

Maybe you should run then & get shiny medals. And tiaras. Some races give tiaras - you'd be more Queen-like then.

I may just do that ;)

Pretty! My planned walk tomorrow will be along the Hudson Greenway to the Little Red Lighthouse & probably over the bridge because I LOVE crossing bridges when I get to them.

That is an awesome lighthouse and an awesome bridge. I'd want to walk across it too :).

Lovely track! You will be jogging regularly soon! The fitter you get, the more you will want to run.

I started the same way because even brisk uphill walking didn't get my heart rate up for a decent burn anymore. That was two years ago....still running. My track is similar from the ascent / decent aspect. I run 5-10k with an average pace of 7-7.5min/km and walk the last km down because it is paved, the first 4k always going uphill . It's not fast but with the uphill running and the trails through the forest, I'm happy with that.

    Go for it overachiever ;)

Hmmm, interesting. I haven't been overly inspired to run at other times when I've been pretty fit, but I think I have better control over my breathing now from yoga and maybe that's making the difference.

I'm so going to take out QOM on that course!! I wouldn't do it on any other courses cos it's unfair, but since it's already been done and therefore is unattainable for walkers, I think it's fair game (I assume it was someone using Map My Walk instead of Map My Run to track it, but I'm a bit clueless about those apps, I just press start and stop!).

*makes mental note to put Map My Run on phone*
