Diet and Artificial Sweeteners

I'm new to this thing, but will give it a try! My topic: Artificial Sweeteners. I'm leaning towards removing them from my nutritional plan. Why? Because I just tried a sugar free pancake syrup, which tasted great, but within 2 hours had me full of gas, bloating, and running for the toilet, if you know what I mean. I have similar issues with sucralose. The only ones I have no issues with are Stevia and aspartame. But, I feel that artificial sweeteners are just that: artificial, man-made chemicals, with names like "sugar alcohols" which are neither sugar nor alcohols. If it messes with my digestive system, it is going to hinder my weight loss, not to mention feeling unwell and anti-social thanks to that gas, etc. etc. I want to feed my body and my mind with good, nutritional foods. And I want to take care of that sweet-tooth once in a while. How to find the balance is the path I am setting out on. What has your experience been with artificial sweeteners? Obviously, one would lean towards natural, organic honey, right?

I cut them out because I don't feel well on them either.
But my understanding is that a lot of the hype that artificial is "bad" and somehow natural will be "good" is not accurate. It is more about what works and doesn't work *for you* and about balance and moderation (honey affects your blood sugar and has calories, just like refined white sugar).
That said, I would certainly rather add honey to my tea than aspartame, so that is what I would do. Agave, raw sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup (real), are also options. But regular ol' sugar is probably fine too, it's the portions that are the problem.
Another option is to cut back on sweet on the whole. I taught myself to drink my lattes unsweetened (the foamed milk has some natural sugars) and I don't drink anything else anymore besides water. I don't even like sugar or agave anymore unless it's baked into something. Like, at first, I just "could" drink the lattes unsweetened. Now, if you add agave or anything else, I find it disgusting and it ruins my morning coffee experience (and I only get one so that's obviously not acceptable!). You can change your palate if you want to, gradually.0 -
Sugar alcohols can definitely have an effect on someone's digestive system. Some tolerate it fine and others not.
I will say that ALL things we eat are "chemically" bound and many "natural" foods have the same chemical make ups as some artificial sweeteners. The body doesn't distinguish if something it's breaking down came from a box or off a tree. It just breaks everything down to it's simplest form and digests and absorbs it.
Artificial sweeteners are one of the most studied of all additives on the market EVER, so unless your consuming a whole box of Splenda in one day (or anything in excess including regular sugar), just find something you can work with.

Thanks for the replies! I think I will try getting used to the "no sweeteners" kind of plan. I like that futuremanda is able to do lattes now without the added. Way to go! It occurs to me that perhaps I have an addiction to sweets (started by the White Sugar) and need to re-train the taste buds. : )

I'm remaining with artificial sweeteners on principle.
Sugars have complicated chemical names, too. http://www.sugar-and-sweetener-guide.com/all-sweetener-list.html
The ratio of fructose to glucose is about the same between honey and HFCS, so I don't think you will find much improvement taking natural, nice-sounding honey over other sugars.0
