I just got a food scale and am ready to test it out tonight. I'm making BBQ chicken, am I suppose to weigh the chicken before it's cooked? (after its finished it will have BBQ sauce of it and will alter the weight obviously) What is the general rule for weighing meats... do you log the pre-cooked or cooked weight?

You'll get differant responces and I am not sure which way is right..I weigh my meats BEFORE cooking..cuz if its 4 oz thats what it is even if it shrinks later during cooking, u started with 4 ounces. Not sure if its right, but thats what I do0

I don't know if this is right or not, but I always weigh my meat after it is cooked, especially if it is grilled. My thought: I'm not eating the fat and juices that drip off so I'm not going to weigh them. I guesstimate on the BBQ sauce..... Hope this helps0

I'm not sure there is a rule. I generally weigh after cooking. It gives you the true weight. I have seen fish and chicken breast lose 2-3 oz after cooking. I am not sure if that is correct or not but generally this site will givebyou calories for cooked and raw. For sauces I just put the amount of sauce used on each piece and enter that in the log.0

I weight before! Then add the sauce individually!
Again everyone does something different but I would say that you should weight it before you cook it....0 -
If you weigh it before cooking, it's going to be heavier due to water weight. There's no right or wrong way to do it, just make sure what you enter into your food journal corresponds to what you measure. So if you were to enter a 8 oz chicken breast before cooking, make sure to look for the words "raw" or "uncooked" under the food description.0

I weigh mine after cooking. From what I read..cooked meat is 75% less of raw meat (not sure if that's accurate or not).0

The weights between pre cooking and right out of the oven are very different. I never know which one to do! I usually assume it's pre-cooked weight though.0
