Barley

Right now I'm really into soups for dinner and I've discovered that adding some barley gives my soup dinners a nice touch. I have, however, discovered that what I've been using is "pearled" barely, which means that all the good stuff in the grain has been processed out . So now I'm a little bummed.
Does regular, non-pearled barely exist? If so, where can I find it? I tried my local Wild by Nature store, which sells bulk grains, and they too only had organic pearled barley. I guess the organic part makes it sound like it's healthy and deserves to be expensive. Trader Joe's, Aldi, and Whole Foods are my next targets but I really don't want to go out of my way to these stores and leave empty handed.
Any suggestions from my mfp buddies?

We picked up a bag of Trader Joe's 10-minute barley last week. We haven't tried it yet. It looks like whole barley and doesn't have "pearled" anywhere on the package but it is par-cooked.
This is from Wikipedia:Pearl barley, or pearled barley, is barley that has been processed to remove its hull and bran. All barley must have its fibrous outer hull removed before it can be eaten; pearl barley is then polished to remove the bran layer.
It is the most common form of barley for human consumption because it cooks faster and is less chewy than other, less-processed forms of the grain such as "hulled barley" (or "barley groats", also known as "pot barley" and "Scotch barley".

Thank you Heidi. I guess I'll check out Trader Joe's. This is what I'm looking for (any brand): bobsredmill.com/whole-hull-less-barley.htmlhttp://

I finally trekked out to trader joes and whole foods and found what I was looking for, and more, at whole foods. They had hulled barley in bulk and they had whole oat groats in bulk too. I've been looking for that grain as well. I was really shocked that TJ didn't have that in bobs.
Lucky vitamin looks like a great online health food store. For this I was more inclined to purchase on location but otherwise that was a great suggestion! I'll be shopping around on there more often.0 -
Great choice! I'll have barley as part of my dinner tomorrow Can't help you with what's what, though. Here in Norway barley is pure unadulterated barley, unless specified otherwise.0

I love barley! Have you tried freekeh? It's another whole grain type thing. I boil it, drain, then toss it with sautéed onions and fresh herbs for a side dish. Leftovers are awesome to take for lunch, add some veggies and feta.
Whole grains are so versatile.0 -
I haven't tried freekeh yet, but I did get a nice big bag of emmer farro. It's delicious in oatmeal! And I got some quinoa. I really like toasting it and then adding it to salad. I might try freekah next time I do a grain run at whole foods. I think it'll be good in salad too!0

I love barley. I prefer it to be malted, brewed and fermented though.
