too much cardio?

I am working out about 90 minutes at a time about 5-6 days a week, and was recently told that this may be too much cardio. I am elipticaling for about 60 minutes at full cardio pace, treadmilling for 30 minutes (20 of which is jogging). I have been told that after 45 minutes of cardio you are actually not accomplishing anything, just going into catabolism? Does anyone know for sure? I am feeling great, and not completely exhausted. I do not feel like I am working out too hard, and would like to keep up with what I am doing unless its doing damage. raimie71

Probably well above what you need, but if you're enjoying it, might as well go with it. I would add some vigorous strength training and make sure to feed well to prevent breaking down too much muscle.

If you are doing it purely for fun, and are experiencing no injuries then have it. However, if you're goal is to burn fat, you may find that doing intervals will accomplish more results in less time. Just google High Intensity Interval Training if you want more info!
  • I do P90X Insanity, Challenge Yoga and Zumba 5 to 6 times a week. I feel fantastic. After the army I have been able to to this, before I couldn't imagine being able to. I agree, add strength training, I do yoga for that. It. is. awesome. Is it back to back. Like, you jump from one machine to another?

If you are, split it up.

I'd kinda think it would depend on the results you're getting from it. But I will say that if you're continuing the same activities, you might consider changing it up a bit with a different cardio exercise. After a while (sooner than later, I'm discovering), our bodies adjust to the movements and become more efficient, which burns less calories. Personally, I don't think that's fair at ALL. But there it is. Glad you're enjoying your workouts!

That is great, but you will burn more fat and calories if you do strenth too. Better yet, add in some HIIT (High intensity interval training) like Insanity or P90X. You can burn like 1000 calories an hour and hey, muscle burns more calories than fat!

I've best heard it summed up as follows:

"Androgens peak (anabolic hormones) from 20-45 minutes into the workout. After an hour of training, cortisol (stress hormone) starts to build). As such an intense workout of 30-60 minutes will be of better quality and intensity as above that you're taking away from your gains by flooding your body with Cortisol."

my trainer told me that if you are doing cardio until your out of breath, that you are no longer burning fat, your only burning carbs,Also you don't want your body to get used to all that cardio everyday, your body will say "OH, OK were going to do our regular routine and it will stop burning, Mix cardio times and machines that you use, through in a spin class or do 20 on one thing, 30 on another and 10 on something else,You'll get better results if you confuse your muscle groups.
