How do you figure calories burned for cross-country trucking with a 45 pound vest?

Let's say you do 5k an hour in rough sandy terrain with a 45 pound vest.

I'll bet you could just calculate the calories for hiking cross country and add 45 pounds to your bodyweight.

If you had a heart rate monitor, should give you a close rough eastimate. But I agree with Scott, just 45 to your weight.

I used a 20lb vest and a HRM for various activities. The burns seemed fairly accurate. Took me a little bit to build up the muscle and endurance to keep my heart rate up with it on. A HRM will also help account for the sandy terrain. I always logged higher heart rates and calorie burns running on snowy trails this winter. Just guess and check your HRM for accuracy. I found eating about 75% back kept me fueled properly and still able to shed pounds.

I will have to buy a HRM soon and learn how to use it. The vest hiking is working for me great. Since I live out in the desert country I have hundreds of miles of trails right out the door.
