Struggling with my body--help :(

Hi guys :) so I'm probably going to share something here that I never have before. 3-4 years ago, I lost 70 lbs due to bullying. I literally starved myself everyday for 4 months. I have recently gained back the weight due to high levels of stress (which equals emotional eating). The weight gain is only causing more stress for me and I'm afraid I'm starting to fall back into my old habits of not eating. People are constantly bringing up my weight gain, and I cannot take it emotionally. I usually eat very healthy and work out a few times a week but I haven't seen results for months, I'm still gaining. I don't want to lose it the unhealthy way again...does anyone have advice from experience? Should I lift or do cardio? Or both? Which one first? Should I take protein supplements after working out? The Internet is no help because there's millions of contradicting information. I'd love to hear from you guys. Thank you ❤️

All you need is a carefully measured calorie deficit. Use MFP to calculate the calories that you need, then weigh your foods on a food scale and measure your caloric liquids with a measuring cup. Don't forget to account for oils and butter that you may use in your cooking--They add up very fast! Don't use generic entries in the database, make your own recipes when you cook, and use USDA entries from the database or non-asterisked entries (Those are official MFP entries and give multiple measurement options).

Exercise is not needed to lose weight. It may help you make your deficit larger, but you don't need it--Weight loss comes from the kitchen. Definitely don't starve yourself! That's not at all healthy, and weight loss doesn't have to be miserable. :)

All the best to you! :)

Oh, and a couple more things: You could eat the healthiest food in the world (whatever food that may be) and still gain weight if you're eating at a surplus of calories (i.e more calories than you need). Healthy doesn't mean low-calorie; olive oils, fatty fish, nuts and nut butters, avocadoes, coconuts, and many other foods are healthy but also quite calorie-dense.

If you feel that you're eating very little and not seeing any results, measure what you're actually eating. If you really are eating very little and gaining weight, see your doctor in case you have underlying medical issues like hypothyroid or PCOS.

Hope my "novel" helps you out! :)

Bullying is one of societies worst evils that children and adults suffer alike. I’m sorry that you had to go through a difficult time. I apologise on behalf of the people who told you things that were born out of ignorance, insensitivity, insecurity and bad breeding.

Losing weight the healthy way is key. Of course you already know that. But losing weight because You want to, for YOUR sake as YOUR life goal is one way to be happy with yourself and your body in the long run.

    Simple Tips:
    1. Eat a calorific deficit. That is – If MFP requires you to get 1600 calories a day – Stick to it.
    2. Cardio helps get your heart rate up and burns some calories. Weight training makes you tone up and well…sexier (more info can be read up on forums with advice from experts).
    3. You can take a protein suppliment if it is needed to meet your goals. Trying to gather protein from natural sources such as lean meat, eggs, fish etc iswidely recommended.
    4. Please be patient. Changes that happen overnight are probably too good to be true. Give yourself credit for small victories, add small treats for mini-goals. You will get there and the changes will be there to stay.
    5. You loose weight in the kitchen and become fit at the gym (stole it from a motivational poster!)
    6. Please add friends with similar goals to give and receive motivation.

Good Luck! You are in the right place :)

I agree with everything above! I've lost 30lbs by only eating at a deficit and I still eat junk food (daily). I try to add in a couple of 3-5 mile walks a week too and also use the Fitbit app. That app links in with MFP and also monitors your approximate calorie burn if you go out for a walk or do any exercise.

Best wishes and if you're needing positive guidance and support to help you along the way then this is the place to be. <3 xxx

Been there, done that, gotten the ill-fitting tee shirt.

Starvation diets never work in the long term because you need to eat to live! It's not like alcoholism where you can just give it up!

I don't eat emotionally (I just EAT) but I do know that a good social worker grounded in science. A meeting like Overeaters Anon might be useful in helping you build a foundation to get through your eating disorder assuming you are ok with it's spiritual side.

Trust a fat lady who has been there, the starvation thing does not work long term, and it only serves to screw you up emotionally because you receive such praise for slowly killing yourself and such shame for choosing to back off and live.

Wish I could give you more advice. I'm 35 and just beginning to get the weight off again. If I could tell teenage me something it would be that bullies are bullies no matter what weight you are. Sure, you're an easier target, but fear is a bad reason to base life choices on.
