I was having a conversation with my mom about water intake. I said I drink 12-15cups (measured in a measuring cup) a day. I asked how many fl oz are in one cup, she said 4. So then I drink up to 60fl oz a day. She said, 64fl oz is minimum and "if you want to lose weight, you need to drink more"

True or false?

A cup is actually 8 fluid ounces. People usually say to drink 8 cups of 8 oz or 64 fluid ounces. I drink 10 10oz cups... so 100 oz total.

the 64oz is based on an "average" weight of 140lbs. (averaging both male and female weights, obviously not American)

the deal is this: drink half your weight in ounces. 8oz to a cup. if you are 200lbs, you should drink around 100oz (or 12 cups) of water a day.

I agree with the above posters... and yes, you want to drink at least 1/2 oz per pound. Therefore, if you weigh 100 lbs, you want to drink 50 ounces of water per day. Clean, pure water. Warm and alkalized is the best... but forget the crystal light or additives that so many people use to make it taste better. That stuff is full of toxins such as aspartame, petroleum based dyes, etc. Just drink the good ole H20.

Wow, all sorts of information - but here is info from both my doctor and a friend who is a nurse - EVERYONE should dring 8 - 8oz glasses of water a day regardless of exercise done, age, gender, etc ( 8 ounces = one cup of water). If you exercise you should add one to two additional glasses of water for each half hour you exercise depending on how vigorously you work out. NOONE should drink more that 16 - 8 oz glasses a day. You wll throw off your electrolytes and make yourself sick.
To lose weight you need to balance your calories in and calories out - you will lose 1 lb of weight for every 3500 calorie deficit you have (500 calorie deficit a day = one pound of weight lost per week).
Extra water is not necessarily needed, but drinking a glass about one half hour prior to eating does help you eat less at meals.
Good Luck. I hope this helps!

Your goal should be to drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily. If you weigh 200 lbs, drink 100 oz of water. There are 8 fl oz in 1 cup.
  • Hi there! I thought that one cup from a measuring cup is 8 ounces, so you are drinking minimally 12 x 8 = 96 ounces and maybe as much as 15 x 8 = 120 ounces. You're drinking more than your Mom is giving you credit for, but I've also heard it said that drinking 64 ounces (eight cups) is the minimum. So a "no" for the first part and a "yes" for the second part.

How's that for splitting hairs?
