hi all as I'm quite new to diabetes I thought I would ask everyone's advice how good or bad is home made popcorn ?

Popcorn will be part of your carbs. What is the food plan you were given?

Hi roda I've not really been given a plan as such just been told to eat low sugar low fat low salt by diabetic nurse she said I will get to see dietician only diagnosed about four weeks ago x0

I am not sure about diabetes but I make homemade popcorn with coconut oil instead of regular oil and it's soon yummy!0

White popcorn out of bulk bin, popped in olive oil, and drizzled with tons of melted real butter, and some salt for kick.
If I feel daring, I sprinkle some garlic powder.0 -

A variety of food is good for a diabetic. It's learning to portion out the carbs, fats, and protein out in proportion, even snacks. I'd eat air popped popcorn with a square of cheese to give the tummy some protein to work on as well. The fiber in the popcorn means it is absorbed more slowly, which is good. This is the first lesson I got as a diabetic, and the most helpful:
Instead of imagining a long list of forbidden foods, imagine a portioned plate. That will give you steady energy throughout the day.
That being said, sugary drinks including apple juice are off the table. Those calories are absorbed far too quickly!0 -

You can also "air pop" popcorn in a brown paper bag in the microwave, without oil. If that's your thing.0

i do the air popping of popcorn. about a handful of kernels in a paper bag in my microwave for 3 minutes. i always put hot sauce on it!0

I didn't know until I saw it on here too. The popcorn maker will probably be easier anyway. Especially if you make it often.0 -

Yes! Or you can just put it in a large microwave safe bowl and then put a microwave safe plate on top as a lid. I did this just last night.0 -

I make mine on the stove in a big sauce pan with a lid.
I tried the brown bag- tried the bowl with the plate on it- didn't work.
So I just make it on the stove.0 -
THE #1 BEST WAY i'VE FOUND TO MAKE POPCORN:
Ingredients:
1/4 cup oil (I use canola, but any type will do)
2/3 cup popcorn kernels
spices/toppings of your choice
First, put a BIG pan onto the stove and pour in the oil. Heat over medium-high heat. Add 3 kernels of popcorn and cover.
Wait until the three kernels pop. When they do, remove them from the pan and porn in the rest of the kernels and cover the pan.
Remove the pan from heat for 30 seconds. Add whatever spices you choose (I love No Salt Added).
Place the pan back over the heat and lightly shake the pan.
When the popping begins to slow down, remove the pan from the heat and remove the cover to release the steam - makes the popcorn crispier.
Once it's done popping, immediately pour the popcorn into a big bowl and add whatever other toppings you choose.
When done correctly, you'll get perfectly popped corn without a single unpopped kernel. Super yummy and super healthy too!0 -

Yes, it works, although I found that I had to hit the "popcorn" button on my microwave twice to get most of the kernels to pop.
If I had a ton of calories left, I wouldn't have a microwave big enough to accommodate the bowl. But last night, I just needed 40 calories or so of popcorn, so it worked great.0 -
Popcorn made with an air popper is lower in fat and calories than microwave popcorn or what you get at a movie theater. It's fairly low in calories and fills you up.

To a diabetic, the oil type or amount doesn't matter at all. It's the carbs that are important, and jgnatca answered that well. To the OP -- watch your popcorn portions carefully until you see your dietician. It's very easy to eat too much, so measure it out.
Also, this is a really good site that will give you nutritional profiles for all sorts of foods, and one of few I've found that actually gives the glycemic load for foods you search for. Glyceimc index is easy to find, but LOAD is more relevant to your daily consumption.
This is the Self Nutrition search result for white popcorn, airpopped. Not bad. GL of 3 for one cup.
