Struggling with what to do next

Okay, so here's the deal. I am very conflicted about what direction to go next with my fitness, and I would love some input. So basically, I just completed a 12 week, pretty intense strength training program. It did incorporate some cardio, but the emphasis was definitely on strength. I made some nice gains, but overall I have come to the realization that I am not going to be happy with my body until I significantly reduce my body fat percentage. That being said, my intention going forward is to focus on a plan that really targets fat loss. My neighbor sold me a copy of insanity for a pretty good price, so I'm thinking of doing that next. At the same time, I am wondering if it will be enough to maintain the strength gains I have made over the past 12 weeks. My original intention was to add some type of 5 x 5 program a couple days a week, but I am also trying to get back into running right now because I have some longer races coming up later on in the year. Clearly doing all of this at once is way too much for anyone. So, I guess I'm wondering what a good plan would be to incorporate the best of everything going forward. Thoughts?

5x5 done twice a week will retain strength better than Insanity.

You can reduce body fat by adjusting your calorie intake.

It sounds like you have some difficult, conflicting goals atm. In order to maintain your strength, you need to continue to make good use of the strength you've gained. So, 5x5 would be great at that. If you do it at a slight calorie deficit, you will be able to maintain most or all of your muscle while shedding fat.

However, you mention that you have some races coming up. Running will also help reduce your bodyfat if you eat at a deficit, but doesn't do much for maintaining your strength.

Either way, you will have to eat at a deficit in order to lose body fat quickly. The question is, can you both strength train and train for your races at the same time. You may have to choose if you want to maximize one or the other.

You could try to lift 3 days and run on your off days, but you will compromise your gains in both areas by doing this.
  • My weight didn't budge until I reduced my carbs and calories but mainly the carbs.
