My knees hurt! There is no better way to put it and I would like some suggestions on what to take for them. I think I'm experiencing arthritis at my young age...any suggestions???

I was a catcher for 11 years and resulted in some pretty messed up cartilage in my knees. I thought I wouldn't be able to run or jump. However, if they bother me I take some Bayer and make sure to ice them right after exercise. I found that what prevented my knee pain was a good and properly fitted shoes.

Do you have fluid on your knees? If you put your hand over the knee it is usually warm and you can kind of feel the fluid. If that is the case taking ibuprofen 3 times a day for a little while should help reduce the swelling and therefore the pain. To ensure it doesn't come back you need to build strength in your knees. I suffer with swelling on my knees and used to go to physio when I was around 15 years old. The only exercise I can remember is if you roll a towel up and put it under one of your knees with your legs out straight. Then push down on the towel with the back of your knee. Do 10-20 reps on each leg. HTH

Try and take some OTC pain killers, some don't work for me so its best to try and find the right one for you. Also as far as exercise goes try some low impact work outs. If you have a gym membership they have plenty of options there for painful knees. The elliptical is a good weight bearing machine that is also easy on the knees or the stationary bike. Try to avoid the treadmill if you're doing faster than a walking pace because it puts a lot of pressure on your knees. Also they have some machines that are like biking but you use your arms, that might be an option for you too. Good luck!

There are many kinds of knee pain, where is the pain specifically? At the top of the knee, or the bottom, or on either side? Does it hurt if you slide the patella? If you step? If you bend your knee or straighten it? Is there swelling? Does it only hurt after working out, or in the mornings when you first get up? I know this is a lot of questions, but there are all kinds of possible causes of knee pain.

Did you do something specific which caused an injury? If so ice and rest might be the way to go. But if the pain is in both your knees this seems unlikely. You could try treating the pain with an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen for a day or two, but if the pain returns, or gets worse see a doctor and find out what the problem is and how you can strengthen the joint to avoid further injury.
  • Glucosamine, you can buy it at any drug store, might help with the pain. But check with your doctor first.

I just had to get two cortisone shots, one in each knee. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I also put ice on my knees, 10 minutes on 10 minutes off and that really helps to relieve the pain.

see your doctor to make sure there is not any damage and it is safe for you to continue exercising without damaging your knees

then...try things out to see what works best...all the suggestions are great

Here is what works for me:
    - wear a knee brace on left knee
    - take glucosamine, chondroitin and msm daily
    - strengthen muscles around knee (took physical therapy at first, now do it on my own)
    - take OTC anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen or aleve) as needed

    good luck!!!
