So hard!!

I've said it before: I have trouble staying away from the sweets & snacking when I'm at work, because the people who work around me are always snacking. They really have no interest in watching what they eat. Fast food is brought in, chocolates are stocked, etc. And it doesn't matter what I eat before I go in (I don't go in until noon, so I eat lunch before I get there), I always want to snack on whatever is there, and usually give in to that temptation. Yesterday, I took my own snack in, which was healthy, and I still ended up snacking on some munchies that were kept in the cupboard. I wish I had a way to keep from doing that!! I was thinking maybe taking in some fruit & raw veggies to keep in the fridge in the room next to mine, in hopes that if I ever get the urge to snack (even if I'm not hungry, which happens often!) I can get that stuff out of the fridge & go to town on something much healthier. If anyone else has any other tips for me, as far as beating the temptation, or other snacks I could try, please pass them on!! I want to beat this!! I will never lose the weight or even keep it steady if I keep going the way I am...

I also work in an office so snacking in the afternoon is a problem for me too. I have recently started buying in some weight watcher chocolate cakes which are low in fat and calories but still allows you to get your chocolate fix.

    Hope this helps.

15 years ago (the first time I lost weight, before kids- 63lbs) the best weapons I found in this situation was a toothbrush and toothpaste.

I found that I didn't want to ruin the cool feeling of freshly brushed teeth, plus if I failed and ate something anyway it tasted like crap. So- yep, heading to the bathroom to brush your teeth instead of heading to the workplace kitchen helped A LOT!!

Stock yourself up with tons of healthy snacks so they are always available as an alternative to junk. Keep some close at hand (if possible) so you don't even have to look at the other stuff. I'm a big fan of almonds or pistachios, maybe small packs of plain Greek yogurt. Fruits are a good choice, but still can be loaded with carbs. Veggies are awesome. Perhaps have a bigger breakfast to help control the cravings. Ultimately though, you have to break the mind hunger barrier. Eating when you aren't hungry (even if it's healthy) will still lead to too many calories. Make a little bit of progress each day, by just "saying no" when you are tempted. Each time it gets a little easier. It took me weeks to break my snack habits.

Me too! I struggle so much! and it's usually me who goes out to the shops to get everyone else their lunch and whatever they want! at the moment i am thinking if i just have one then i'm not depriving myself just having a taster. However this can lead to having a whole packet or a huge handful!

I also try to think of the dress or outfit i plan on wearing at the weekend. I joined twitter too, to use it as a vent if i want to get something off my chest that would sometimes drive me to choose an un-healthy option.

Good luck and i hope you suceed! add me if you want - we can give each other motivation!! x

I heard L-Glutamine helped with sugar cravings. I watched a youtube video by Sean Croxton of undergroundwellness.com that stated this. Can't the find the video right now.

Its honestly all about self control. Don't go over to the food. Don't look at it. Be strong. Remind yourself that a sweet moment of indulgance will have to lead to a half hour or so in the gym. This is how you got to this point in the first place. You know what that junk tastes like, you don't need to try it again. Nabisco 100 calorie packs are awesome, so are fresh fruit/veggies. Bring your own and munch on that. It's hard. I know. I really know. Lately I've been giving in alot more too, but you've got to hold strong to WHY you're making this lifestyle change. You're strong and CAN DO THIS!

I know what you mean. At our office we have a guy who brings in Dunkin Donuts once a week and we have a monthly meeting that pizza is supplied. The only thing that has helped me is logging everything into myfitnesspal. As for the pizza, I check the data base for the calories of the different pizza’s and then make my choice as to which one I will eat. The data base of foods really helps when you check out the calories of something before you eat it. I also keep light yogurt on hand and when those donuts come in I reach for a yogurt. It is still hard but I have been able to keep from the donuts. It really helps to log EVERYTHING into myfitnesspal. Good luck and hang in there. You are not alone in this struggle!

I work in the same type of office and have had some issues with snacks. Love the idea of brushing teeth and will have to try that one. I have a few ways to avoid the snacking. One is grabbing a big glass of water in the afternoons and every time I want to eat I drink some. Another is making sure I don't go near where we keep our snack foods (kitchen). Also, I pack some healthy snacks including fruit and Cinnaburst Cherrios. Finally, my hubby swears by this one, he brings a pack of gum with him so he is always chewing.

For me it is all about the mindset. I used to have a huge sweet tooth. I wasn't around junk without eating some. But when I started this I decided that if I was serious I had to be willing to pass on foods I liked but were counter productive to my goal. I have been at two parties in the last two weeks and skipped anything that would blow my calorie count for the day. I still allow myself to indulge from time to time (this sunday at my graduation party) but I make every effort to fit it in my calorie count and not eat on impulse. It can be done! Good luck.

I keep several things at my desk - a box of cheerios, a box of Special K chocolatey pretzel bars (amazing!) and a can of natural almonds. I also pack two fruits and a greek yogurt every day along with my sandwich. All of these keep me from the candy store down the hall...for the most part. I wish I could say they work 100% of the time but there are still days (especially around TOM) when I MUST have chocolate and there is no other alternative. Even in that case though, I limit it to two mini pieces and if I'm tempted to have more, I put them in my food diary and have a little talk with myself reminding me how far I've come and how that kind of mindless emotional eating is what got me to 260 in the first place. That usually is enough to convince me to calm down and forget about the chocolate.
  • I agree that it's all about mindset...I love my junk food...milky ways, peppermint patties, ice cream, etc....I also know that eating like that is what got me here in the first place. I've lost and gained so much weight so many times it's mind boggling.

When temptation hits, I just try to remember all the hard work I've put into getting to where I am now, and how much further I have to go...is that donut or chocolate or piece of cake worth it? Not to say I never give in, as I don't believe in depriving myself, cause then I just feel sorry for myself...I'm on a mission and the ONLY thing I can control in this life is ME, what I eat, say, do etc...

Bring your own snacks in, as others have mentioned, there are a lot of really good snacks that are a lot better for you, wether you are craving sweet, salty, crunchy, creamy, etc...You can do it, just put your mind to it.

    Good luck!!!
