    Gaining muscle mass and having cardiovascular fitness are both aspects of fitness. One is not necessarily better than the other (although studies show lean body mass is a great indicator of increased longevity). What are your goals? Once you have that down, pick the exercises that enhance that fitness quality.

    Well my goal is to get over all stronger and get rid of some fat

    Fat loss comes from what and how much you eat. Figure out what you need from a living and fueling your exercise. Get the macros down and stay at a small deficit. You'll slowly shed the fat.

    Strength comes from progressive resistance exercise (e.g., lifting weights). Find a good program (I like stronglifts) and stick with it. You won't bulk up because, firstly, bulking up is hard, and secondly, you won't be eating enough to allow it to happen.

    Patience, persistence, and progression.
